TN: Two Teroldegos....(short/boring)

Tried these two Teroldegos last night:

  1. Matela Teroldego LeBonClimatVnyd/SantaBarbaraCnty (13.5%; www.BevelaWines.com) Bevela Wines/SantaMaria 2012: Dark color w/ slight bricking; some cedary/pencilly/mature red fairly classic Teroldego/black cherry/blackberry slight licorice/plummy some toasty/pencilly/oak bit Pinotish rather complex lovely nose; bit soft slight tangy/metallic some Teroldego/black cherry/blackberry/licorice/spicy some toasty/Fr.oak light earthy fairly complex flavor w/ modest chewey tannins; very long black cherry/Tero finish that tracks flavor; speaks lightly of Trentino Teroldego but the oak suggest more a heavy ABC PinotNoir; a rather unusual expression of Teroldego. $31.50

  1. Foradori Lezer IGT: Vigneti delle Dolomiti Rosso (12%; 68% Teroldego/32% other varieties; LouisDressnerSlctns/NY/NY) Elisabetta Foradori/Mezzolombardo/Trentino 2022: Rather light rose/garnet color; pleasant herbal/spicy/Tero haymow/new mown hay light pencilly/oak/smokey rather fragrant/floral/Tero attractive nose; lightly tart/tangy lightweight Tero/floral bit herbal/haymow light pencilly/Fr.oak rather pretty lightweight flavor w/ very light tannins; a rather pleasant/lightweight red that is one step above a rose; not show much Tero intensity. $28.00 (KK)

Bevela is the label of Kris & Marisa Beverly. She is the niece of JimClendennen/AuBonClimat:

Jim was the first to plant & produce Tereldego yrs ago under his IlPodere label. When Marisa joined the ABC winemaking team, Jim turned over his Teroldego project to her as her own project. She had just released the '12 vintage at a great price on the recent WineBerserkersDay10 offering, so I jumped on it and ordered hlf a case, sight unseen.
For my first tasting of this '12, I thought I’d put Marisa up, mano a mano, against the master of Tereldego, ElisabettaForadori. Quite different winemaking styles. Elisabetta ferments in tall clay amphora (made by Jose Padilla in Spain; widely regarded as the master) with extended skin contact. She farms BioDynamic and, being in the Louis/Dresner portfolio, can be regarded as a “natural” winemaker. Yet I’ve never found her wines to show any of that funky character that can plague “natural” wines. Her fermenting room, w/ amphorae as far as the eye can see, is amazing. But her Teroldegos stand heads&shoulders above any produced on the RotilianoPlain in Trentino.
I was confident that Marisa would equip herself well against Elisabetta. I generally prefer Elisabetta’s basic Terodego to her top-end Granato, though I prefer her vnyd-designate Teroldegos. I was kinda surprised at the rather rustic/rough character it was showing in this '13. But it was classic Teroldego on the nose. The Bevela had loads of pure Teroldego fruit, but w/ the imprint of the ABC Pinot Fr.oak. I thought this sorta cluttered up the purity of the Teroldego, though gave it more complexity. I think I’d have preferred it w/ a bit less oak. But Marissa’s Teroldego is very much world-class Teroldego.
She also makes a bit of Syrah that is very/very good. And a Teroldego/Syrah blend which I’ve not had.
A top-notch winemaker to watch. I’d love to see what she can do w/ Schioppettino/Refosco, and LaCrima.

Tom,

Great notes as usual. Don’t think Marisa is making wine anymore - I know the Bevela label is no more - her and Kris divorced a number of years ago. Kris has his own label - Civilization Wine Co - but not sure Marissa is still involved in the biz at all.

Cheers

Nice note on the Lezer. I really enjoyed the 2021. I hope it crosses my path again soon.

Sorry I couldn’t be there, Tom. I could have contributed this, which I’ve wanted to taste alongside a Foradori.

This one recently won the Colorado Governor’s Cup

Well, the Sauvage Spectrum was in the Governor’s Cup Collection as one of the top 12 wines (in both 2024 and 2023). The Carboy Teroldego (from the same vineyard) won Best in Show in 2022 and 2021.
