TN: Two Syrahs - Melville and Beckmen

2006 Melvile Syrah Estate - Verna’s

Nice wine, but a little riper and lower in acid than I’d like with some kirsch notes that Parker would love. Dark and almost syrupy. Surprising considering the vineyard location.

Slight notes of VA - a bit like some of the Albans I’ve had. I’ll save this for tomorrow with the ancho/coffee short ribs.

2007 Beckmen Syrah Estate

Much brighter and livelier with some floral notes on the nose. Not as dark or unctuous. Slightly lifted aromas and higher acidity that will go much better with the pork/fennel/olive stew.

Bob - did RP’s notes describe a “glycerin” note? If so, that is a cue to me to stay away from the wine. That being said, I have always felt the Melville Estate Pinot and Syrah were good values.

I have no clue. I don’t subscribe and never have.

I let my subscription lapse for the first time in a long time…that being said, I found with RP’s specific notes that if he praises the glycerin…I run away

I’m a fan of both wineries, and their respective estate syrahs as well. Good value for arguably the best estate syrahs in the Santa Barbara area.

Beckmen has that great Purisma vineyard, too, where much of the great SRH syrah is sourced.

Other than the VA which I didn’t get at all, your notes on the Melville are spot on. I had this about 2 months ago and had the same kind of note for it. Still a good wine, just a touch overdone with not enough acid to compensate.

Well, there goes the theory I have no palate . . . or maybe you don’t either! [berserker.gif]

Seriously, I have a high level of sensitivity to TCA, VA and aldehydes of all kinds.

After being open and re-corked in the fridge for a day, the apparent acidity had increased and some very obvious black pepper had surfaced. The wine was much more pleasant to drink as a result and, to me, this bodes well for some short-term cellar time.

Uhhhh…Beckmen’s Purisima Vnyd is on Ballard Cyn, in the SYV. Melville has two sources, SRH at the winery location, and Cat Cyn (Verna’s) in the Los Alamos area - which I believe is just considered SBCo.

Lots of great estate syrahs IHMO from around here that are great values . . . Stolpman, Fess Parker (yep, I DID say it!!!), and the two mentioned - ALL under $30 and well worth it!

Cheers!
