I had not yet tried the Syrah. It is inky purple in color. The nose is huge and very nice albeit not what I was epecting. This is more of a Napa Syrah nose with te amp turned up to 11. Black raspberries, cocoa, dark chocolate, smoke and just a hint of grilled rib-eye. It took about 2 or 3 hours to really open, then, it has a juicy texture with nice fruit. Not as flamboyant as the nose, but still lots of fruit. Long finish. Nice balance. This is very good, but is over priced. I have some06, and I know RP loved the 07, but at some point, I may need to rethink this. There are lots of great Syrahs out there for half the price. Still, there is no denying this was great. 2006 Jonata Winery Todos - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley (11/15/2009)
Having just tried the 05 Syrah, i wanted to see how this compared at 1/3 the price. Inky purple with some ruby. The nose has some resemblance with cocoa and raspberries, but is a bit more restrained and oak driven. The palate was a bit bitter and took about an hour of air to remedy this. I know it is young. This needs more time or at least a good decant. At the two hour mark it was really singing. Not as good as the Sryah perhaps, but just a touch off. There is plenty of value here. I am not sure there is enough fruit vis-a-vis the oak for long term storage. My other bottles will rest a year I think and then be drunk over the following 2. And that’s fine. (93 pts.)
