TWO FOR XMAS: HOBEL AND JAFFURS - (12/26/2011)
Went to the in-laws for Christmas. After starting with a Bruery Four calling Birds (Beer), we drank these two with dinner.

2009 Hobel Wine Works Cabernet Sauvignon Engelhard Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
Pop and poured, this opened up quickly although it kept improving until emptied. The nose is big with great fruit, cassis and some blueberries. There is also this deep, almost bourbon like note that I really liked. just a bit of earthiness. Velvety texture. On the palate, this is obviously primary but showing some complexity. Great fruit but showing some restraint in terms of ripe/sweet categories. I didn’t get alcohol, but my wife noticed a bit. No matter, the wine was emptied quickly. Delicious. (94 pts.) -
2006 Jaffurs Syrah Verna’s - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
This wine is evolving very slowly. Pop and pour, this took a couple of hours to really open. The nose is fantastic with black raspberries, some cocoa, grilled meats and some vanilla. Lush texture. Nice backbone of acidity that went well with the food. Showing some complexity but more about fun and enjoyment right now. Really good wine. No hurry on these. (94 pts.)
