TWO BIG SYRAHS FOR THE BIG GAME - Watching the SuperBowl (2/3/2014)
It was the big game and we chose to have two big wines. Although I didn’t really care who won, it turned out these wines were perfect for watching the hard hitting Seahawks slam the Broncos. Normally, I don’t enjoy blowouts but it was hard for me not appreciate just how thoroughly Seattle was dominating the game. With players flying to the ball, stepping up when the action came their way, it was a great display of defense which I love. Also really thought the half time show was really enjoyable and well done. The wines were chosen as wines that could hold their own against a lot of different flavorful wines and also, wines that didn’t need to contemplated. The wines worked great and demanded attention.

2003 Clos Mimi Syrah Westerly Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
My last bottle of this wine. Quite an amazing showing. Yes, this was obviously made in a big ripe style but next to the 07 Saxum BR, this is deeper and more complex at the moment. The cork was popped and this slow-oxed for about 6 hours before drinking. It was quite fragrant when the cork was popped filling the cellar. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has black raspberries, leather, slight earthy funk, a bit of licorice and a charred quality. Lovely juicy, slick yet full texture. No heat. Layers of complexity on the palate. Black raspberry fruit, but not bright, more deep. Long finish. Got better with every glass. Finished the bottle after a couple of hours and the last glass was the best (except for sediment). 16.5% ABV, but no hint of alcohol. Really a beautiful wine that is still getting better. IMO, another example of a wine that people said would fall apart and is ageing quite well. (97 pts.) -
2007 Saxum Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Opened and allowed to breath for about an hour (it needed more, but this was a last minute decision). Purple in color, shining and bright. The nose is great with black and red raspberries, white pepper, a bit of grilled meats. Full bodied. Smooth with no sign of alcohol or heat. Great velvety texture. The flavors jump deftly on the palate. Tightly wound, it kept unwinding as the night progressed. Still quite young and needs plenty of time at this point. Just delicious though. (97 pts.)
