TN: Two 2006 red Burgs

TWO 2006 RED BURGS

  • 2006 La Pousse d’Or Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
The lighter red colour of the two wines. Spices and cherries and other red fruit, with a touch of florals. On palate, very Volnay. Elegant and a little pretty. Crystalline and pure. Red fruited with sufficient mid palate weight but a little lighter bodied than I was expecting. Some grainy tannins and brushwood flavours I was also not expecting (from the bouquet). It would probably benefit from another 3-5 years in the cellar.
  • 2006 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Deep, dark red. A very different bouquet. Blackberries and other dark fruit, damp soil and a little Gevrey funk. On palate, serious structure and volume. Tons of grip. Not at all opulent. Earthy and dark fruit flavours wrapped around an iron core. Fine grained, suave tannins. Very impressive but seeming very young and primary. It is drinkable now (particularly with food) but this wine really needs another 10+ years.

Thank you for the useful, cautionary recommendation about the Corbeaux’s prime-drinking-window.

Ditto. Reminds me of my experience opening an '08 Corbeaux about a year ago or so. Somewhat enjoyable with some air, but no where near peak.

You’re welcome guys. The Corbeaux is in my experience typically a pretty backward wine. Last year, in a lineup of '07s, the Corbeaux was the most closed iand inaccessible, even more than a couple of Grand Cru. Earlier this year, someone served me an '09 Corbeaux blind. I thought it was a beetrooty mess, until I found out what is was … These are typically 10 years minimum wines IMO.
