Cayuse Syrah Coccinelle 2003:
So last night my wife and I were entertaining a good friend for dinner. We made an easy dinner of NY Strips w/ chimichurri, blue cheese potato salad and some asparagus. We opened a few wines to try later but while we were cooking my wife made a mixed drink that had tequila, mint and pineapple in it (among other stuff). By the time I got around to tasting the Cayuse the bottle seemed very off and I decided against drinking it with dinner. I wasn’t 100% convinced there was anything wrong with it . . . perhaps my palate was a bit off because of the range of flavors in the drink, etc. Anyway, we had a nice bottle of Pierre Peters NV and Pape Clement '02 with dinner. Later, much later, I went back to the Cayuse. Now the wine was truly a mess. It seemed a little cooked . . . which is strange because none of the other wines in this case were. And I had a bottle of this in November of last year that showed well. Let’s be honest, this was never a great Cayuse or a great wine . . . but it was never a hot mess. Just wondering if anyone has had this lately to give me a reference point.
Actual notes:
Steroid-infused blackberry pie covered with canned peaches, roasted herbs, crushed No. 2 pencils and day-old chocolate milk. The essence of a good wine hangs in background . . . the jumbled mess of a bad (cooked???!) wine sits in front of me. Later in the evening seems like rotten peaches mixed with tobacco in a BBQ smoker . . . NR Flawed
