TN: 07 ROULOT BORGOUGNE BLANC, 03 CHRISTOFFEL AUSLESE, 07 DELAS CDR - San Francisco, CA (9/1/2009)

Last night we met Douglas in his neck of the woods since he is always coming out to our place or to Christianne’s place…so it was an evening in The Castro. A glass of wine at Swirl Wine (shop and tasting bar). Then we were going to head to Anchor Oyster Bar but they were a little too crowded so we headed to a very nice Vietnamese Place on 18th and Castro IIRC.

Dinner and wines were tasty and conversation is fun. Look forward to another culinary adventure in the Castro soon.

  • 2007 Domaine Roulot Bourgogne Blanc - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
Had Tuesday night. Opened and immediate hint of matchsticky sulfur that needed a little time to blow off. But this is a terrific, very crisp, focused wine. Minerals, lime skin, and a hint of almonds with the seashell and glycerin. Very nice wine for the $22 or so dollars paid. (89 pts.)
  • **2003 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese **** - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
This was not easy to get the cork out. Soaked it broke in half and the bottom half was so “soft” the corkscrew just drilled a hole through it. So I pushed the cork in with a chop stick (we were at a Vietnamese restaurant).

The wine showed some petrol, of course some sweetness, peaches, orange blossom and some minerals. It’s ripe, rich and round. I would have preferred a little more acidity but still a very nice drink of wine. (90 pts.)

  • 2007 Delas Frères Côtes du Rhône Saint-Esprit - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Also with Vietnamese (shaking beef). I had higher hopes for this wine but ultimately have no idea how it got 90 pts (which by definition is “Outstanding”). It comes across a little simple with plummy flavors, oak (which at first was overwhelming), then settled into to show some decent pepper/spice and cherry fruit. I nice everyday wine for $10 and something I would potentially purchase. 84/100 (its good but falls short of very good to outstanding). (84 pts.)

Tony,
Christoffel sounds pretty typical of the vintage. I tried a bottle of the Delas several months ago. Had to look back for my note, but I thought it was pretty decent, maybe 87-88, but honestly your score is probably more realistic. Does seem to be some bottle variation, perhaps depending upon source (mine was from K&L). FWIW, I did not buy any more.
Cheers!

I wasn’t thrilled with that Saint Espirit either.
Gets killed by many other '07 CdRs in the same price range.

The Roulot is killer for the mon! K&L right? Better if you give it big time air…and should gain even more in a few years. The '06 is better right now.

Brian = correct. Our friend Christianne picked it up prior to dinner - presumably when she thought we were headed to Anchor Oyster

Alan - yeah, I thought about giving the Delas a couple more points b/c of the $10 price tag but as they say, it’s what is in the bottle that counts.

Yep, agree with Tony, Dennis and Alan’s assessment of the Delas. It’s just fair, even at $10. I also bought my bottle at K&L. The screaming deal in '07 CdRhone that I’ve had is the Dom. Autard. Beltramo’s was selling that for $11 or 12.
