The Burgs / Pinot

1999 Nicolas Potel Volnay 1er Cru Mitans - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Corked.

2002 Nicolas Potel Bonnes Mares - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Earth, spice, and strawberry on the nose. Flavors have good depth with lots of nice red fruit and a slight minty note towards the finish. Very very smooth and tasty but it still seems like there’s a lot more waiting to reveal itself, given enough time. (92 pts.) -
2007 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Westside Road Neighbors - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Delicious RRV Pinot Noir with all of the characteristics I’ve come to love from that region. Dark cherry, pine forest and spice notes on the nose and nearly perfect balance on the palate. Great length and finishes so smooth. Will probably be fantastic in several years but so tasty now, why wait? (93 pts.) -
2002 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Very tasty Pommard that’s not overly heavy on the palate. Earthy cherry fruits with good acidity up front that gives way to a delicate finish that shows a hint of minerality. Easy to drink and enjoy. (90 pts.)
The Maybachs
-
2005 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Dark, nearly opaque, purple red color. Lots of oak which, on the nose, comes across as a mix of chocolate, vanilla and coconut scents. This is a big wine on the palate but it’s very nicely structured and is a pleasure to drink. (93 pts.) -
2006 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Drank alongside the 05 Materium Cab and of the two, I think I preferred this one as it seems to have just a little more balance of fruit to oak. It’s still a baby at this point and I would recommend decanting it for quite a while to really get the most out of it. Both the 05 and 06 are fantastic wines. (94 pts.)
The Stinky Syrah
-
2001 Cayuse Syrah En Cerise Vineyard - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
This is very much a love it or hate it wine. I think a lot of people will have a really hard time getting past the nose on this wine. To put it simply, it stinks. It smells of horses, barnyard, and all those other things that make the farm funky. Fortunately, if you can get past that, it’s really quite tasty. Full bodied with ripe plum flavors that have just a slightly hefty feel on the palate. Good finish. (89 pts.)
