TN: the "White Album" - Rieslings that Rocked the Night

THE “WHITE ALBUM” - RIESLINGS THAT ROCKED THE NIGHT - (11/26/2014)

Only the hardcore riesling-heads dared to meet on a Tue before Thanksgiving in order to drink some of the best dry(ish) wines Germany can offer.
Huge thanks to all for coming - Rob. Eric, Leo - you guys are like family and you should know that these doors are always open to you.
An additional thanks to Rob for the cheeses - OMG. I cannot remember what we had but i can still smell them

  • 2008 Seebrich Niersteiner Oelberg Riesling Spätlese trocken - Germany, Rheinhessen
    this is an amazing QPR.
Peach and apple on the nose, nice mid of citrus and touch of tropical fruit with a fleeting RS. dry finish. clean and crisp acidity. very nice! I can see how one could go through a case of these! (89 pts.)

  • 2010 Weingut Jakob Schneider Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling trocken MAGNUS - Germany, Nahe
Hermannshohle is an amazing vineyard. and it shows in this wine. Floral nose, veering toward roses and sweet peaches. mid full of ripe pears mixing with tart (green) peach and lots of minerality/ slate. grapefruit tones pitch in. Ripe and broad wine that has a good deeply tart finish. This had a hard time in tonight’s lineup but is obviously a very good wine. glad to have a few. (91 pts.)
  • 2012 Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling trocken - Germany, Nahe
mineral and chalky, with a touch of red berry on the nose. a hint of sulphur. the mid has some smoke and spicy tropical fruit. goes from green papaya to almost pineapple but with absolute dryness and amazing acidity. very long sleek finish. lovely wine - needs a few years for it to come together fully and it will be a stunner. (93 pts.)
  • 2013 Weingut Keller Riesling RR - Germany, Rheinhessen
nose of sweet peach and ripe pear. very young - really tight. spatlese weight, tart peach , green apricot in the mid with hints of papaya. a bit of RS in the mid but the finish is mainly dry. with time this broadened - opening up to more fruit and richness - has a ton of potential. (91 pts.)
  • 2004 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese trocken RR - Germany, Pfalz
amazing. slate, dry smoky herbs, earthy, bitter orange, herbs and citrus in the mid. spicy with notes of green apple and pear… this is thinking wine - complex and complicated - but soooo worth the effort. WOW. one of the best dry rieslings i have had to date. (95 pts.)
  • 2012 Selbach-Oster Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese feinherb Alte Reben - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
spicy and citrusy nose (lemon curd?) more peaches with time. This is showing very tight on night one and had a huge improvement on the second day - when it showed broader and richer - with a ton of sweet fruit. peaches and cream mid. spicy tangy finish. this is an ager - touch of RS is there in mid and finish. Think of it as an old fashioned spatlese perhaps in sweetness (but with more stuffing). lovely. (92 pts.)
  • 2012 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese feinherb Ur Alte Reben - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
WOW. sweet peach, ripe pear and apples, minerality galore. mid has a touch of the tropical but with green apple to balance it. smoke over stone and spice. ripe and concentrated. Needs time to really show. stunning wine. (94 pts.)

  • 2013 KMV Project - USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
virtually a barrel sample (Rob just bottled these) - this blend is mainly Merlot with some Cab Sav/PV/Syr

sweet plums, rich, hints of chocolate on the nose. mid has a lovely herbal/tobacco leaf note with tart red fruit dominating. ripe and tannic but with great balance and acidity. lighter than the big 2010 blend but very yummy. cant wait to see this develop. (91 pts.)

  • 2010 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling ‘Rotlay’ - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
loooove this. How can anyone NOT love this peach and apricot bomb? deep mid full of tropical fruit, mango and orange slices. spicy and racy with a hint of bitter orange on the finish. sooo smooth and creamy. Reminds me a bit of an eiswein and i would guess the botrytis will make it age in a similar fashion. excellent stuff. (94 pts.)
  • NV El Maestro Sierra Pedro Ximénez PX Viejísimo - Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
sadly - last one. this is one of the best PXes out there. Hand carried back from spain and sourced by the gracious Jesus B himself.

Figs, sweet plums, cake, nuts… rich as molasses and almost just as thick - yet keeps itself fresh with an amazing streak of acidity. fig juice with dates and cream. mindblowing finish. … ah …if only there was more. (96 pts.)

Great night and great friends… guys - when is the next time???
