TN: The Tale of Many Auslese and One Scheu

THE TALE OF MANY AUSLESE AND ONE SCHEU - (12/15/2014)

Huge thanks to Salil for deciding to drop in before his flight! And to the old friends and new ones that joined us!
Thanks to Eric and Deb, Jay and Arnold, to Karina and Seth.

The wines were great and the company is…always invited back!

Now to the wines

  • 2009 JĂ©rĂ´me PrĂ©vost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut Les Beguines - France, Champagne
really opened up after time in the glass - i would say this may be a bit young. creamy, with granny smith apples and toast. touch of sweet fruit in the mid but a long dry finish. this was lovely - like drinking mousse. One of the few champagnes to ever make me want to taste more  with time green apples and the creamy texture really took over… very decadent. (92 pts.)
  • 2010 Equipo Navazos Jerez-XĂ©rès-Sherry La Bota de Vino Blanco MMX “Florpower” nÂş44 - Spain, AndalucĂa, Jerez-XĂ©rès-Sherry
need to buy more! yeasty, nutty, figs and almonds, light mid with zingy acidity and chunky sweet figs. touches of honey and oranges, long finish. delicious! and at 11.5% alc - guiltless pleasure! (92 pts.)

  • 1981 Il Colle Brunello di Montalcino Riserva - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
amazing sangio nose. Iron, meat and blood. Gentle palate, minerals and cherry, light with a refreshing acidity. earthy tones smooth finish of resolved tannins. (93 pts.)
  • 1988 E. Guigal CĂ´te-RĂ´tie Brune et Blonde - France, RhĂ´ne, Northern RhĂ´ne, CĂ´te-RĂ´tie
ripe, syrah, leather, meat and blood. Funky, old leather smell, resolved mid with lovely hit of warmth on the finish. mid is still full of red fruit with smoke and pepper. delicious! (93 pts.)
  • 2000 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
roses, cherry, minerals on the nose. very young. I nursed the glass over several hours - while it did fill in a bit it was still very tight. mid is ripe with cherry and red fruit, long savory finish with a solid grip. tasting potential here. (93 pts.)
  • 2000 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, RhĂ´ne, Southern RhĂ´ne, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
herbs, mineral notes, good black fruit, ripe mid. not close to the spectacular 2001. this opened a bit with time - thus i would say it is not on the downward slope. very nice wine - had a terrible time against the competition tonight (91 pts.)

  • 1997 Von Schubert Maximin GrĂĽnhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Auslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
out of all the auslese… i would want more of this one. (tbh - probably a modern spatlese) Yes - the Mueller was fantastic. But this is exactly where i love riesling - clean, sleek, slate and stone over apples. floral, mid of green apples and zingy acids. gorgeous. (94 pts.)
  • 1997 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
peaches and apricots (touch of botrytis) ripe sweet core of peaches and cream. finishes dryer, lighter than one would expect. touch of herbal tang. there is a bit of burnt orange/botrytis note in the mid. excellent. (93 pts.)
  • 1997 Egon MĂĽller/Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese Auction - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
baked apple, apricot, rich botrytis wine - baby eiswein. the middle is ripe but clean, bordering on tropical fruit in the mid - with the peaches and pears toying with mango. this is a seriously delicious bomb  Thank you, Seth! (96 pts.)
  • **2002 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese **** - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
rather closed on the first night. tried a bit now to help with the note. ripe peaches, floral nose with some spice. the mid has a lot of stuffing - mainly pear and honey. Needs time IMO. Tough company for it last night. (91 pts.)
  • 2001 MĂĽller-Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Spätlese - Germany, Pfalz
grapefruit, mango, this is scheu with “claws out”. mid is ripe with pineapple and herbs. Zing of acidity…fruit of every color and weight dancing on the palate. the finish is medium (i blame the grape) but it really doesnt matter - this wine is just killer. thanks Salil. (95 pts.)
  • 1992 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ăśrziger WĂĽrzgarten Riesling Beerenauslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
started of with plastic note on the nose. Some of that blew off with time - but not all. this is all botrytis all the time  spicy nose with ripe apricots and dry apricots over burnt orange slices and baked apples. ripe and sweaty in the middle. good finish but needs a bit ore zing for the big boy. (92 pts.)

thanks again guys! Safe flight to Salil and hope to see you all soon!

Nice!

Really appreciate the note on the Abstberg Auslese. I have two bottles buried somewhere in the cellar.

That '01 Catoir is not Scheurebe with claws out. Try some kabinett trocken, and then we can talk about claws!

Nice, I have drunk a few of the 97 Grunhaus, and a little less of the single fuder (49?) version in recent years, delicious stuff, plenty left!

Notes printed off and in my 3 ring binder!!
Question: I have access to some Scheurebe from the Nahe, should I try a bottle?

2012 Schweinhardt Scheurebe Lohrer Berg (Nahe, Germany)

Have not heard of that producer Bob. I tend to be wary of Scheu from unknown sources.

OK David. As a matter of interest Mission Hill from Okanagan still produces one but have not seen of late. I found it rather sweet if I remember correctly?

Kurt Darting makes good Scheurebe Bob.

Looks like another bravura night for you and guests, Count. Great post. Would have loved to have been there for the M-C----the 2001, I can only imagine how fascinating it was, and your notes bear that out. Nice to see the Guigal did not disappoint either. And the notes on the Rieslings tempt even me! [grin.gif]

Sante,

Mike

thanks guys - the funny part is this was relatively unplanned. Salil emailed me and asked if i had time on Sunday because his flight was out of JFK. That was on Wed. On Sunday we had a full house and ridiculous wines to boot!

David - i promised Salil to come stay at his place in Feb for a few days - and hopefully drink a few things with you!
