TN: Ten years on… 1999 Didier Dagueneau Silex

I sometimes never understand why the “this is past it” or “this is still young” lines are used in notes without suggesting a middle ground. Didier Dagueneau wines are a classic example of this phenomenon. They are always too old or too young. There is never the perfect drinking window for these wines, especially the Silex!

But lets face it; Sauvignon Blanc is boring as everyone keeps telling me. Luckily there isn’t a clue on the bottle that this is one. Popping the cork to this vino is rather like having an aromatherapeutic back rub by a female date and a ‘six of the best’ master class in restraint & finesse. The texture is creamy, smooth, sensual and a positively revolutionary drinking experience. Sadly my only bottle and thanks to Don for swapping something for this with me.

It’s hard to compare this to other wine you may be used to so I won’t, but it is stunning & very, very clever.

Its a lovely wine Phil but is it worth the £60 price tag? Not in my book although I did pay about half that for a few bottles of the 2006 vintage on bid for wine.

Great notes, Phil. I have only the '05 as a reference, but I’ve hidden a couple of bottles of this away to enjoy “too young” in another 10 years or so.

Keith, I guess I agree, but as we always end of saying “worth it compared to what?”. Personally, I would not pay the current $100+ price tag here, but did grab four for $40 from a distributor friend having a blowout sale in '05 and they are spectacular wines.

Same as others. Great wine, unfortunately too expensive for my wallet.
