TN: Tasting Jura, pt. 6 (Ganevat, Labet, Rijckaert, Pélican, etc.)

^ Wish I were in that group! My tolerance for VA, bretts and the likes is pretty low, and I too am tentative about red Jura wines from “hot” producers for this very reason.

I usually prefer the whites much more, but the issue is yet again pricing. Pélican, Labet, Tissot and others are at the same price as St Aubin 1er cru or Rully or St Véran or etc. etc. (in French wine shops but also often at the domaine).
They are good wines but I will almost always pick a Bourgogne in the same price range. If quality were egal, the risk of buying a wine much too “nature” for my tastes is much, much higher.

I’ve never had a Tour de Curon (yet… see above for explanation) but all my tasting group friends were enthusiastic about it.

Alain

My tolerance for brett and VA is extremely high, but mousiness is a no-go for me.

I prefer Jura Chardonnay to Burgundy most of the time, also when it comes to much more expensive white Burg. Often less oaky, a little less fruit forward and often with subtile delicious notes of nuts and baking spice, even in the reductive versions. (I am talking about ouillé wines here).

White ouillé Jura is 25-30% of my wine collection and mainly consists of: Tissot, Marnes Blanches, Labet, Ganevat, Les Dolomies and Boulanger & Allante (and a few bottles from other producers).

And when we talk about Tissot. Then his entry Patchwork wine is great at release. The higher end Chardonnay’s requires a few years. But Tissot’s Traminer (ouillé Savagnin) is just as good with a little age. Overall i actually prefer Savagnin to Chardonnay most of the time.

I has a very elegant, flowery, fruity ans spicy Michel Gahier Arbois Trousseau Grands Vergers 2019 (16,5/20) in Pupillin yesterday (restaurant Le Grapiot in Pupillin, highly recommandable).

An excellent (and rare) Gaec Overnoy/Houillon Arbois Pupillin Savagnin 2016 (17,5/20) yesterday in a restaurant in Pupillin. Complex, concentrated with a great personality.

The Arbois Pupillin Paul Benoit et fils Savagnin typé 2016 (16,5/20) was interesting too.

Finally bought a 2019 today…

I actually just picked one up myself yesterday - I now have a '17, '18 and '19 in the cellar, so I think I’m going to have to come up with a reason to try them all together. :wine_glass: :sunglasses:

Going to the shop in Arbois to buy some 2020 Curon today…

Had these four Tissots this Saturday. A lot of variation in how far developed the Chardonnay’s were. All very good, but a bit scary that they were in three very different phases. Had these bottles stored since release in proper conditions.

But at the end of the day, it was the Traminer that had me wow’ed. And this is not the first time. Such an overlooked Jura. The 2016 is now singing!

Will probably be the one i focus on going forward.

Overlooked? In what sense? Isn’t that just a normal Savagnin, one of the most planted varieties in Jura? Or do you mean that this specific bottling is overlooked among the Tissot lineup?

This!
Fortunately, I get to visit my home and cellar in NYC every 6 weeks or so.

Yes, this.

Righty, makes more sense! Haven’t got any idea about the popularity of different labels in Tissot range so I have no idea which ones are overlooked and which aren’t.

Can you elaborate on this?
Very curious since I have all of them in the wine cabinet (2018 though)

Sadly i didn’t take a picture of the wines in the glasses next to each. The color of each wine had been the best way to explain it.

But the Graviers was definitely prematurely developed. Rather dark in the glass and with a ton of oxidative notes both in nose and taste. The acidity just carried it through, but another year or two and this would probably feel completely dead.

Bruyeres was the complete opposite. Light in the glass and very reductive as these wines are in their youth. All about the matchstick notes, salt and lemon. Absolutely delicious, but drinking like it was just released.

Mailloche somewhere in between with some oxidative nutty notes but still very fresh. This is more what i expected from all three. Taste wise the Mailloche was my favourite.

Had a few more 16’s since release. And they have been all over the place sadly. Lots of bottle variation here. When they are one they are great wines though.

Hope that helped a bit.

No Traminer in the shop. Bought 2 x 2020 Curon though.

With the Overnoy bought this morning a decent day.

I’ll add that we tasted most of Alice Bouvot’s 2022s from tank this morning. Beautiful stuff.

YMMV!

Tomorrow Maison Maenad.

(We sell both in Bordeaux).

Hope to follow in at least some of your foot steps in May! :wine_glass:

Nice. Really want to taste a wine from Maenad!

We still have some for sale.

(In a mixed package).

Seriously, if you see some buy. But more will come available in the coming years as she took on additional vines.
