TN: Tasting at Meme (Scholium, 05 Clos de Papes, 97 Jadot CdB, Ovid Experiment)

TASTING OF SOME HIGH END AND UNIQUE WINES - Meme (22nd and Spruce in Philadelphia) (8/29/2009)

We enjoyed a nice four course meal at Meme (starter, entree, cheese and dessert). Very enjoyable.

  • 2008 Scholium Project Naucratis Lost Slough Vineyards - USA, California, Central Valley, Clarksburg
Really tremendous. Good complexity and weight to this refreshing wine. Deeper yellow color. Citrus, wet stone, banana and some cucumber on the nose. Spice, sweet brown sugar, citrus and minerals on a coating palate. Sharp acidity. Good long graceful finish. Well made wine. (93 pts.)

  • 2002 Perrier-Jouët Champagne Brut Rosé Belle Epoque - France, Champagne
Rather plain. Pale pink color. Strawberry, raw dough and butter. Good refreshing acidity. This was simple. (87 pts.)

  • 1997 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Exceptionally well crafted Clos de Beze. Bright red color. Good fruit, spice and earth on the nose. Good acidity carries this on the palate. Nice complexity. Red fruit. Well integrated oak. There is a nip of heat in there. Good lingering finish. Does not reach sublime heights but very satisfying. (94 pts.)

  • 1975 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve - USA, California, Napa Valley
Definitely past its prime. Brownish orange color. The nose was the best part. Caramel, butterscotch (Werther’s Original) and some earth. Surprisingly bright for a wine this old. Lacks fruit. Palate was weak and a bit watery. Underripe. Shorter finish. Interesting wine to taste but if you have them, drink them now. (86 pts.)

  • 2005 Ovid Experiment K 1.5 - USA, California, Napa Valley
This caught me a little off guard. Deep dark color. This is loaded with chocolate, toffee, espresso bean and a hint of secondary dark fruit. But this not a fruit driven wine. There is also a minor hint of green vegetable, but it is very subtle. Good sweet fine tannins coat the palate well. Not quite “pure” espresso but maybe espresso jelly beans – it had that candy like quality to it. A shade of heat on the mid-palate and finish. Good strong finish but not terribly long. This is a very good wine. Good experiment! (94 pts.)

  • 2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Quality wine! Deep red color. Nose of sweet cherry, salinity, plum. I noted some sweet tomato and blood. Very rich thick and coating palate. Dense concentrated wine but not over the top. Great building finish. The pedigree and class from this wine is obvious. (94 pts.)

  • 2001 Château Suduiraut - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Good complexity. Tinge of browning to this. Good citrus fruit along with honeyed peach, brown sugar and caramel. Nice concentration. Needs a little more acidity. A little simple on the palate but a nice finish. (92 pts.)
  • 2002 Alois Kracher Scheurebe TBA #10 Zwischen den Seen - Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
Really delicious. Very sweet. Viscous. Light brown color. Acidity keeps this propped up. Sweet apple juice. Good but on the simpler side. Nice consistent finsih. (90 pts.)
