TN: Tasting at Emrich-Schönleber

TASTING AT EMRICH-SCHÖNLEBER - Weingut Emrich-Schönleber (7/25/2009)

Today was a warm, cloudy summer day in the Nahe region. I am in Germany to visit my ailing father, but I was able to squeeze in a quick tasting with Frank Schönleber of Emrich-Schönleber. He couldn`t have been nicer and more helpful, and it´s always fun to see an enthusiastic, dynamic winemaker of my own age excel and really succeed. All the wines I tasted were outrageously good, the prices were more than fair, and Frank was having fun showing me the fruits of his hard wine making labor. On to the wines:
Trocken Wines
The trocken wines were right down my alley. Lean, mean, and built with sturdy acid structure, I enjoyed these wines immensely. When I asked Frank Schönleber what he thought of vintage differences between 2007 and 2008, he said that 2007 was a fatter and riper year while 2008 was leaner and more classic in a good sense.

Off-Dry Wines
I only tried two off-dry wines, and I liked them both. Interestingly, while I preferred the Halenberg across the board on the dry wines, I preferred the less fruit forward Frühlingsplätzchen among the off-dry wines, as it showed less lush and more restrained.

Thanks to Frank Schönleber who couldn`t have been nicer and more helpful, and now I am really looking forward to tasting with Dönnhoff on Tuesday.

Steffen,

It sounds like this must be a bittersweet trip home for you, thanks for taking the time to post notes for the rest of us. I’m a big fan of Schönleber’s wines, although they’re tricky to get ahold of in my market. I wish I saw the Lenz, particularly, as it sounds like that one is well suited to a wider array of pairings than his liebliche wines. Interesting comments about the '08 vintage as well. I believe he said the same thing in reference to the comparison of '07 and '06.

Are you also going to be able to taste at Schäfer-Fröhlich?

Best,
Jamie

Jamie.

I am unlikely to have enough time to visit Schäfer-Fröhlich on this trip. I am tasting with Herrn Dönnhoff on Tuesday morning, and maybe I can squeeze in one more visit on Monday morning. I was leaning toward making a trip to Klaus Keller in Dalsheim for that one…

Jamie.

The “Lenz”, btw, is only €7.90 at the Weingut. INcredibly cheap for a wine this good. If I lived here, I would have bought 3 cases to sip on over the coming months. Crazy QPR. I didnt ask Frank Schönleber, but I would guess that this isnt being exported to the US in great quantities. I just looked on wine-searcher, and the “Lenz” goes for $23 to $30 for vintages 2007 and older. That is a pretty big markup.
