TN: Switckback PS 2005

The JFTLOI was was ratcheted down from the two Switchbacks, no doubt. It showed WAY better than the previous bottle that I had in Vegas last year where WetRock was present. It most definitely needed some time to calm down as I am sure both the Atlantis and Ravens Series will need.

Perfect bottle. I have had this many times in these parts (land of FMIII) and this was right in line. I bought it because I actually wanted to try one at home. The way I drink wine. In my environment. The enjoyability factor went way down. Very different trying to have this with some food and trying a sip in the midst of 30 other wines.

Not to say there aren’t times I would enjoy this but I can get the same pleasure from a Molly Dooker for much cheaper.

For me, for this discussion, this is not about bad versus good bottles–it’s about palate preference and taste. Mike, you and I mirror palate preferences, which is why I believe you and I like the same wines so much–SR, L 'Aventure, Saxum, etc. For Jason and Cris, who I have been drinking with for several years now, we have divergent palate preferences. I respect both Jason and Cris for their palates and their stylistic preferences but whereas Cris will get a thrill out a Barolo, or a Bdx, I will not. Jason’s palate is more like Cris then mine (and by default, yours much like mine, Mike) so this for me is what is at play here. Mike, your comment about the 2005 and 2006 being close is spot on for me, including your remark about the former being just a bit better.

I have never drank a Mollydooker (well, maybe once with Robo Winn) but I can’t compare SR to that wine. However, the wines that champion each of our palates is for me a gift, one that I enjoy watching when someone like Cris, or Todd, get a wine they really like. This, for me, is SR.

BTW, Cris, as much as we have discussed this before, there is not 30% new oak on SR. I have personally covered this topic with Kelly Petersen before (who owns the vineyard and Bob Foley makes the wine) and the wine sees only neutral oak. Whether that be 2 year or 8 year old barrels, Kelly has indicated there is no new oak. And for SR, why would you need it–for 50 year old vines (one section of the property), it doesn’t need the wood to spice it up.

Well put I threw my thoughts in there to say the wine may not be suited for Seaway’s palate … at least for things they want to fill their cellar with.

I for one really enjoy when these wines are poured for me since I don’t own them. There is no doubt that the Switchback folks are serious about their wine and take great care in producing them. And I am very glad there are many styles of wine that are well made. And occasionally there are the wines where our palates converge Fun stuff. After all I just posted on the Rivers Marie cab that is made in a somewhat similar style.

Tex, well, you are right. I was moving to fast there but I know MIKE and I like similar wines, and I guess in the respect of SR, you and I on that wine, as well. I need to find an excuse to open a 2006 within the next 2 weeks.
