Last night at a good friends pre birthday celebration we did a mini-Duncan. Through the years we have done scattered bottles of many SQN cuvees, but usually mixed in with wines from around the world. After having tasted many awesome wines last night, The Long Island Wino Docs have concluded that while vertical or horizontal tastings are educationally interesting, mixed tasting of wines from around the world are more our style. IMHO drinking wine should be a pleasure that should not require too much analysis and I love the varied flavor profiles all in one night. All this being said, we had a remarkable tasting with great food
Champagne starters.
Krug MV, unsure how old, came from a mixed collection with average age 1882, so probably 30yr old…heavy citrus element, strong flavors, light bubbles
. MV Krug ages just fine.
1996 Dom Perignon…multi layered, chocolate, citrus, should age for 3 decades easy. Still has some baby fat, but aging is just starting. Beautiful!
THE SQNS WERE ALL GREAT WINES. MANFRED IS AN AMAZING ARTIST!!!~
The Dark Blossum G and S were too young, great, brooding, give them 6+ yrs
The Pictures G was too young as well, lighter weight than the Dark Blossum, needs 3-5 yrs
Papa was like a Older LaLa with some tobacco and fine tannins, incredible balance, in a great place now.
Atlantis Syrah was OMG good with soaring berry notes, pepper, great balance. Atlantis is the regular cuvee from 2005
17th Nail, extended aged 2005 syrah, was like the greatest LaLa ever made, super fine, everything was perfect
Naked Truth, the extended aged G from the 2005 vintage, was ROCKING! Greatest G I ever had? Whatever, an amazing sister wine to the 17TH Nail
The Atlantis Grenache sweet wine was a weird cross between port and sauterne. Great in weird way. My friends WOTN!
Mr K Strawman… never tasted, too full
Nice lineup! Any tasting notes to follow?
Nice lineup! Which was your favourite? 17th Nail “should” win that contest!
Duncan, I was completing my post and figuring out how to add attachments. 17th was spectacular!
Your recent tasting with Pearl Clutcher sounds spectacular. When you come to NYC I’d like to join you
I like the term “mini-Duncan” as reference to an SQN tasting!
