TN: Sonoma Pinot Noir

SONOMA PINOT NOIR - (8/5/2011)

Last night one of my tasting groups met to sample some Sonoma Pinot Noir. All wines were pop and poured and consumed blind for 1.5 hours. After unveiling, we enjoyed them for an additional hour.

  • 2009 Bridesmaid Wines - USA, California, Napa Valley
This was 67% Sauvignon Blanc and 33% Semillon. Blind it was so over oaked for my tastes it was hard to tell (I thought it was Chard). Yellow/gold in color. The nose is fresh cut lumber and vanilla. A very slight grapefruit note. On the palate, the oak is more tolerable, but it still is a vanilla/grapefruit milkshake. Some will like this more than I. (85 pts.)

  • 2008 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is earthy with cherries and a green component which included green olives. Tart. On the palate, black cherry and root beer. Lacks everything compared to the 07 and not as ripe. Not a bad wine, but not in the same league. (88 pts.)
  • 2007 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
It was cool having both the 08 and 07 right next to each other in a blind tasting. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has cherries, and earthiness and some mushroom notes. Nice. On the palate, big, bold cherries. Light tannins. some menthol on the finish. This had the best nose in the group and is a delightful Pinot. (91 pts.)
  • 2006 Marimar Estate (Marimar Torres) Pinot Noir La Masia Don Miguel Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Purple/ruby and some brown notes. The nose has cherries and also a green component. On the palate, sweet cherries (maybe not fermented completely dry?), with some root beer on the finish. This is ok, but seems more manipulated than the others. (87 pts.)
  • 2008 Kutch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Excellent wine. Ruby in color, clear and shimmering bright. The nose has cherries and powdered cherry drink mix. Thick and voluptuous. Cherries, rhubarb with a slight menthol note on the finish. The nose was slightly tight, but the palate by far the best. Another year or two and this should be ready. Delicious now. (92 pts.)
  • 2006 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Russian River Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Disappointing showing. Easily the groups last place wine, finishing last or second last on every ballot. Ruby, pale and flat. A bit of cherries on the nose but not much else. Disjointed, hot and quite tart on the palate. Off bottle? Perhaps. (86 pts.)
  • 2008 Fulcrum Pinot Noir Tia Marie Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Jeff K. showed up late, after a Cal Cab tasting (what dedication) and brought this. We drank it non-blind. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is cherries, cinnamon, and spice. Dark cherries and cherries on the palate. Really delicious. The biggest wine of the night for sure. (91 pts.)

Thanks for the notes… we just did a nice sonoma coast, russian river pinot tasting. Curious, where the wines intentionally served sonoma coast, then russian river valley, or is that just the note order?
