A few old friends ventured down form Indy last nite and we drank a few wines. These are merely impressions as we were far more occupied in enjoying each others company than being totally fixated on the wines.
1988 Krug Champagne Brut - France, Champagne (7/25/2009)
Lemon/citrus. Very pale gold which suggest a youthfullness which is born out on the palate. Beatiful, intriguing and delicious. This is very high praise coming from a person who generally doesn’t “get” Champagne.
1998 Château Figeac - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (7/25/2009)
CORKED NR (flawed)
2001 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie (7/25/2009)
I suspected this would be infanticide and for once I was right. This is one tightly coiled wine. Not angrily coiled, but nnot pleased at being opened way before its’ time. Nose full of black olives with just the faintest hint of bacon. Initially the was some brett but it seemed to blow off. Tannins and acids in control at this point. My curiousity satified, I need to forget these are in the cellar until sometime around 2015, so it can start to approach its’ full potential. Big upside.
2001 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru (7/25/2009)
Cigar ash flavors with some hints of reduction. Fruit was not in evidence. Perhaps it is shut down, but regardless it was not a pleasant pour. I thought it to be slightly corked but others disagreed. Regardless, 2/3 of the bottle remained at the end of the evening which indccates it was not a crowd favorite.
2005 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore - France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre (7/25/2009)
Great minerality to accompany the abundant citrus/grapefruit. Everything seems precise and focused until a bitter stemmy quality emerges on the finish.
I’ll try to post impressions on the rest of the line up, when I can find a few more free moment.
