Some notes from two great tasting.

  • 2011 Immich-Batterieberg Enkircher Ellergrub Riesling - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (4/16/2016)
Tropical, mango, papaya and pineapple. minerality is there but hiding. mid has ripe yellow fruit and more pineapple. mineral notes on the back. sweet apricot. long zesty finish. (91 pts.)
  • 2014 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (4/16/2016)
Wonderful sweet apricot and yellow peach on the nose. mid has some green apricots and some apple. the back and mid palate were lacking acidity and the finish was rather short. either awkward point or? (88 pts.)
  • 2003 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Rheingau (4/16/2016)
light apricot and peach nose. with time - peach and stone. great acidity, pears and peaches in the mid moving toward creamy oranges toward the finish with a touch of zest. lovely and mature. (91 pts.)
  • 2002 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Rheingau (4/16/2016)
early maturity - just coming into its peak. Apples and peaches. stone. mid is full of yellow and green apple with some white peach. great acidity and length. spicy zesty finish. this is excellent. In a good place now but will keep going effortlessly. (92 pts.)

  • 2011 Vietti Barbera d’Alba Vigna Vecchia Scarrone - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d’Alba (4/16/2016)
Young. Cherry - from the red to black. with time - more cherry liqueur. mid is full of ripe cherry but also a serious structure to it. hints of bitter chocolate and dark fruit. chewy finish with smoky spice. excellent. (93 pts.)

  • 2005 Finca Sandoval Manchuela - Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Manchuela (4/11/2016)
Solid and still young. showed better as the night went on. cherry and raspberry at the start, with time more savory herbs and smoke. vibrant and still young (with a bit of a tannic grip) berries and pepper in mid. feels cooler climate and well structured. herbs and spice come in with time. the only thing i dislike about these is the size of the bottle  other than that - every vintage i have had shows well with some age to it. (92 pts.)
  • 2008 Windgap Syrah - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (4/11/2016)
unusual nose of cali pinot (stem/cherry/funk), mid is ripe but leaning toward cherry rather than darker fruit. good herbal tone thoughout and a nice acidity. bit of olive note. with time - touch more plum on the nose. quite interesting and good. would love to see what it does with more time. (90 pts.)
  • 2006 Carlisle Syrah Dry Creek Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley (4/11/2016)
WOTN. Sweet black fruit, savory herbs, funky “animal” note. touch of smoke. Mid is resolved, smooth with great fruit and a zing of acidity. Fresh, chewy, ripe plums (red and black) touch of pepper on the finish. delicious. (93 pts.)
