TN: Some QPRS

SOME QPRS - Our home (3/16/2014)

Book club met at our home last night. This is a couple club who like wine, but no geeks. The book was Let the Great World Spin. Very well written book, but not much plot. Worth reading though. Anyway, I opened some QPR’s for the group.

  • 2011 Luneau-Papin / Domaine Pierre de la Grange Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Vieilles Vignes Sur Lie Clos des Allées - France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine
First time trying this vintage. Slivery gold in color. The nose is good with crushed shells, sea air and minerals. The palate lacks something however. It is a very good wine, but lacks the cut and body of prior vintages. Works well with food, but just falls a hair short of my high expectations. Of course, for the price, this is still a great value. (89 pts.)
  • 2007 Château de Saint-Cosme Côtes du Rhône Les Deux Albion - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Last bottle of a stash I bought on release. All have been great and this was no exception. Maybe at peak but plenty of time left in this QPR. Purple/ruby in color. The nose has boysenberries, raspberries, spice and minerals. Nice texture. Some complexity to it. Juicy acidity. Long finish. Plenty of fruit, little tannins. (91 pts.)
  • 2012 Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel Old Vine - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
Great QPR. Purple/ruby in color. This bottle seemed slightly more reticent than prior bottles, but with air it opened nicely. A nose of spice, black raspberries, slight bramble and a bit of leather. Great texture. Juicy dark cherries and raspberries on the palate. depth but not much layering. Long finish. (91 pts.)
  • 2012 Bedrock Wine Co. Syrah North Coast - USA, California, North Coast
Another in a line of wines that were damaged to due to cold shipping. The winery is replacing them so I am drinking them up right away. The cork was out about .5 inch and soaked all the way up. This bottle is singing as were prior ones. A deep nose of leather, black raspberries, roasted meats and black pepper. Juicy acidity. Full bodied. Open and drinking well. I am sure this is advanced, but it shows where a pristine bottle might be in a year or two. Great QPR. (92 pts.)
  • 2009 Château Haut Barrail - France, Bordeaux, Médoc
Consistent with prior bottles. Maybe even a scooch better. This is drinking quite well right now. A nose of cherries, some cassis, and a bit of bell pepper. On the palate, this has nice complexity. Bordeaux fruit, that is to say, not exuberant, but persistent. Cherries, black cherries and cassis. Some earthiness. Good balance. Food friendly. Another great QPR. (90 pts.)

We had a totally open for business, full throttle 12 Bedrock Old Vines Zin yesterday. Hard to spend $20 in a more worthwhile fashion.

I still have a couple mags left of the 2007 St Cosme. Last one was excellent but may still be improving so no rush in this format, IMO.

Nice note on St Cosme.

Yea, the 07 Le Deux Albion was dang nice. I went through 2 cases. One of my favorite CDRs of that vintage, a vintage where IMHO the CDRs showed better than the CDPs.
