  1. I am committed to lead the SantaFeWinos Facebook group in a few weeks on a tour of Portugal. I’m a bit out of my elemnt here so have been exploring a bunch of different Portugese wines. This is some from over the last week.
Thus far, I’ve not been finding anything that makes the Portugese wines particularly distinctive. Many of them strike me has rather Port-like, but dry & not the alcohol, and the emphasis is on ripeness. Thus far, none of them have really chimed my bell. But I’ll keep trying.

This one tickled me as an entrant in a near impossible blind tasting

Looking at the colour, you’d say medium to light hued red, yet was 80% Fernao Pires (white) and just 20% Trincadeira. It’s an attempt to recreate a historic style (hence the medieval bit). It’s not some gimmick though, as we very much enjoyed it.

Sparkling Baga also worth a try if you see it - I’ve enjoyed both that I’ve tried.

I’d not tried that Niepoort wine, but had been meaning to (fun / irreverent producer making a light wine with a grape I like). Another one that I didn’t take to, partly as it didn’t have the faults the label promised, was their Clos du Crappe, styled as a wine intentionally made with some faults, but actually came across more like a decent clean Cote du Rhone. I was rather hoping for something Musar-like. Finally, their classic Redoma red is classy indeed and does age very well.

For Vinho Verde, Soalheiro are superb. The standard bottling good and even cellars well for a decade or more. Primeiras Vinhas or Granit both well worthy of trying. I’ve also been recommended Aphros as another producer, but yet to taste anything from them

Anything from Luis Pato ought to be tried as well. With or without Duck on the menu

Mature Moscatel di Setubal is crazy cheap for a wine with age on it, and should be interesting

Dulcinea Santos Ferreira Bairrada Sidónio de Sousa Riserva may come in a ‘look at me’ heavy bottle, but it’s very much to my tastes and far from the rich & oaky wine such a bottle might hint at.

Tom, I would recommend the following 2020. Oh wait. LOL

Paging @Tomas_Costa

Need to check out both Filipa Pato and Luiz Pato in Bairrada, Quinta do Sobral and Quinta da Pellada in Dao, Soalheiro and Anselmo Mendes in Vinho Verde, Herdade do Mouchao and Fita Preta in Alentejo. Dozens of others.

Second Luis Pato. Their Blanc de Blancs is excellent and IIRC €9.99.

Here’s a thread on a 2018 Palacio da Brejoeira Vinho Verde “Alvarinho” I drank a few years ago. I was at a wine shop in the Algarve and asked the shop owner to recommend a non-Port that best represents Portugal, and that’s the one she suggested.

Also need to check out Madeira, Moscatel de Setubal, and Carcavelos for classic fortifieds other than Port.
Recommend visits to JM Fonseca and Horacio Simoes in Setubal and Villa Oeiras in the village of Oeiras. It’s part of the old Marques de Pombal estate. The estate is worth visiting on it’s own.

This. Villa Oerias is the last producer of Carcavelos left standing.

Got one of those in my tableau for next week. Imported by Haus Alpenez in MN.

Haus Alpenez also has stocks from Quinta dos Pesos, which went under in 2004. In Portugal you can find a some from a few other defunct Carcavelos producer, too.

Had a great tasting at Oeiras a few years ago. They were experimenting with different oak barrels and we tried 6 different ones with 20 years of age. Some of their vintage dated wines are outstanding.
