2006 Porter Creek Carignane (Alexander Valley, Ca)
This is one of my favorites from Porter Creek. As always, the nose is heavily perfumed and brimming with violets, earth and forward black cherry. Light/medium bodied with soft, round tannins and pairs especially well with a variety of foods. However, the finish on this particular bottle was noticeably disjointed and veering on the acerbic side.
2004 Scherrer Old and Mature Vines Zinfandel (Alexander Valley, CA)
Another knockout zin from Scherrer! Juicy blackberries, caramel and spice fill the glass while the entry on the the palate glides cleanly with ample acidity and medium tannins. Compared to the '03 Old & Mature Vines I had not too long ago, the '04 is much more lush and to my taste, could use another year, but these zins have the structure to age even much longer.
Thanks Brett, I wish I had the patience and willpower to let my OMVs age. I may have one or two of the special selection 06s around … but other than that it is the extraordinary 07s. They are disappearing fast.
