TN: Scherrer 2007 Zinfandel, "Old and Mature Vines" Alexander Valley

IMO, year-in and year-out, one of the world’s “First Growth” Zinfandels.

14.5% alcohol. Vines planted in 1912 (that would be 97 years ago for you math-challenged).

Medium dark ruby red. Cherries and strawberries on the nose. In my experience, Scherrer Zinfandels are consistently of the “red-fruit” persuasion. A blast of rasberry fruit on the palate, followed by a little pepper, smoke and more red-fruit delight. Exquisite balance. Wonderful red-fruit complexity. Rich and lucious. One of the best Scherrer Zinfandels I’ve ever had. Lingering aftertaste.

The considerable charms of Fred’s “Shale Terrace” have already been extolled on this Board.

This one is even better. And it will improve. If you don’t have this … eat your heart out!!!

Mike
have you had the 2004 of this wine?

Yes Carrie, it’s totally consumed now, but I had a case. This is better!!!

What a great Zin this is, but I thought you were going to open a “Special Cuvee” so I don’t have to. [good.gif]

Awesome note, Mike. Fred really makes absolutely killer wines. I don’t order enough of them.

Thanks Tom. I can almost group my mailers into two categories: the “why did I order this much?” and the “why didn’t I order more”

Fred’s wines are consistently in the latter category!

Joe,
I had the pleasure of tasting the 07 “Special Cuvee” with Fred at the winery a couple of weeks ago, right next to the OMV. Similar flavor profiles, the SC was just ramped up in terms of volume yet had that incredible balance, showing no signs at all of the 16+% alc.
I wished I had traded for one of them, as Fred was extremely generous with the trades. But I didn’t want to push it. He did also give me an 04 OMV and a 2000 Cab that absolutely floored us. Fred said it was “ON” right now, and he was right. It was one of the finest Cabs I’ve had in a looong time.
I can’t wait to play guitar with him someday. He’s got a little music/recording room in his winery. Great guy.

Well put on the mailers, Mike! Totally true there.

Had the '06 OMV last night and it is really developing beautifully. I hadn’t expected this much so early, but like the good showing on the '07, these '06’s are really in a good space right now, with the balls to go several more years, easily.
