TN:s My back sucks the wines didn't

OK my back has sucked for the past 5 weeks. Finally after starting steroids I was feeling better and needed to get out. Several of us met up at Aria both to support Hardy Wallace and to get together to have dinner and drink some good stuff. Don C were there who I hope posts some of his thoughts

I continue to work on my TN skills set but my brain is more left sided than right (or is that the other way around)

2001 Leroy Vosne-Romanée "Les Beaux-Monts"

What a special wine. I am a Burg novice and there are two producers that seem to have a signature nose that just screams Burgundy. Leroy and Dujac. Out of the bottle soaring aromatic plush velvety fruit earth the complete package. And still just a baby WOTN for me Thanks Don C

2001 Henri Boillot Meursault Charmes.

Another freaking great wine. Even less experience with white Burgs but going to buy the 2007. So rich and refined. Little of a buttery feel seductive engrossing, what a finish. So good with a scallop dish. Thanks Don C Another WOTN

1982 Beychevelle

What a great buy from PC last year. Popped and poured no decant. Great fill and after opening in great shape. In a great drinking window. Mature balance. Detected a little sweetness. Lacking some complexity only minor detraction. For the dollars fantastic

1983 Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage la Chapelle

Another great buy at PC. Soiled label full fill. No decant. Popped and poured. OK I have zero experience with older Hermitage wines. I did have the 1990 vintage of this wine and I recall greatness. This was very good unbelievably fresh if not somewhat on the decline. Peppery meaty just not the powerhouse I recall the 1990 being. Thoroughly enjoyed early on in the meal

1989 Lynch Bages (375 ml)

One of my favorite wines of all time. 375 ml bottle drinking great. Lots has been written about this wine and it’s all true for me

1989 Pichon Baron (375 Ml)

Sucks doesn’t it to have to now suffer thru this wine next to the 1989 Lynch. Just kidding. This was fantastic as well. Some felt it was a little tighter compared to the LB. All loved it
1998 Giacosa Barolo Falletto Rocche

OK I had to have an Italian wine just love these. I had opened 10 hrs before without decanting and that this worked its magic. Screams Barolo. Tar roses everything. No surprise REAL YOUNG but really a pleasure to drink. Glad I recently ordered more. I suspect will improve but if you are into pleasure and like them young no reason not to drink some now

There were several other wines that I do not recall.

Those wines don’t suck.

Recently had the '89 Lynch and it was just shade under the expectations.

Nice lineup. Just starting down the slippery slope of burgs myself, and can’t help noticing that you had TWO WOTN’s and they were both from Burgundy.

Keep your hand on your wallet!

Wow. Nice lineup guys.
Wish I could have made it.
Thanks for the notes Alan.
glad the back is feeeling better.

Wonderful wine lineup!! Fortunately you were not on other medications for your back that might otherwise alter your sense of smell/taste! Awesome.

I’m getting more and more interested in opening '98 Barolo - seems like it is in a fun space now, even if not close to ‘fully mature’.

A really super nice night.
Great notes here Alan.
I really love Burgundy as you know.
The Giacosa wasn’t bad however.

Dennis
Thanks for the kind thoughs. The back is slowly improving. I am not a patient sort but keeping things in perspective as this is just a blip in life when compared to real life struggles

Hope to see you soon

Alan,
Sounds like a great night! Thanks for the notes. My dad is a huge fan and collector of Leroy and so I’ve been lucky enough to drink many of them. Her Les Beaux Monts is always something special.

Sorry to hear about your back troubles. I just had back surgery last week, so I know how it goes. Hopefully you’ll have many more med-free days ahead of you to be able to drink some more great wines.

Todd

Some of the 98 B&B’s I recall having and liking
1998 Azelia Bricco Fiasco
1998 Barolo Falletto de Serralunga not the Rocche
1998 Giacoma Conterno Francia (needs few more years)
1998 Giacosa Barberesco Asilli very nice solid wine
1998 Giacosa Santo Stefano Riserva (needs more years)
1998 Gaja Sperrs (baby killing but was quite good)
1998 Seghesio Barolo Vigneto la Villa
1998 Marcarini Barolo Brunate
1998 Marcarini La Serra
1998 Elia Pasquero Barbaresco Sori Paitin fantastic

A lot of the 98’s are selling for a disount c/w the surrounding vintages

Alan

Poppy I read about that. Here is wishing you a speedy and full recovery. That we can all drink to! [cheers.gif]

Wow, Alan!!

I have picked up a few '98’s, but should probably pick up more, rather than more '04’s which need so much cellar time.
