TN: Ryme Vermentino "His" '16/Buckel Zin '21.....(shortt/boring)

Tried these two wines over the last few days:

  1. Ryme Vermentino “His” LasBrisasVnyd/Carneros/SonomaCnty (11.6%; www.RymeCellars.com) Geyserville 2016: Deep gold some browning color; rather resiny/VinoMacerati strong graham cracker/honey grahams some honeyed/honeycomb/haymow bit herbal/earthy some complex interesting nose; rather tart somewhat tannic strong resiny/phenolic/VM some honeyed/honey grahams/graham crackers bit astringent/bitter rather austere rather complex flavor w/ some grippy tannins; long rather austere briney/savory phenolic/VM complex finish that tracks flavor; starting to show some evolution/graham cracker character but still dominated by the resiny/VM character.

  1. Buckel Family Wine Zin CastanouVnyd/RedwoodVlly/MendoCnty (13.2%; www.BuckelFamilyWine.com) V&B by Buckel Family Wine/Gunnison/CO 2021: Med.color; rather earthy/loamy/rustic old-timey MendoCnty Zin bit raspberry/Zin/lightly spicy bit coarse quite old-timey Zin nose; soft some raspberry/Zin/slight spicy rather rustic/earthy/loamy somewhat redwood-tanky pretty old-timey flavor w/ light coarse tannins; med. coarse/rustic very old-timey/redwood tanky finish w/ light coarse tannins; lacks Zin fruit & not very good except for nostalgic reasons. $34.00 (SFW&S)

More mickleferk from TheBloodyPulpit:

  1. Buckel is a small CO wnry that makes a full range of CO wines. Not sure how this wine got to Gunnison/CO from MendoCnty. Assume the grapes were tucked in & it was made in Gunnison.
This wine was quite a trip back in time. It had a redwood tanky (though aged in neutral Fr.oak brls)/old-timey character like many of the Mendo Zins made back in the '50/'60’s; reminded a lot of the old Fetzer/Foppiano/Parducci/Pedroncelli/Weibel Zins. It was a nice trip down memory lane but the wine didn’t do much for me.

Many Colorado wineries had to bring in fruit for the 2021 vintage due to the October 2020 frost where the buds for the 2021 grapes were destroyed.

Thanks for the clarification, Mel.
They have frosts up in CO?? :-1:

Tom, probably not for long.
