Baron Widmann, Weinberg Dolomiten IGT, ‘Rot’, 2009
I never would have guessed this is a classic Bordeaux-blend of cabernets sauvignon and franc, and merlot. It tastes more like a Blaufränkisch or Zweigelt in its flavor profile and texture. Dark and spicy, with spent cherry and plum skin on the palate, cherrywood and acacia on the heavy, somewhat rustic finish. Alcohol (14%) really coming through on the finish. On the second day, the wine transforms by becoming fuller and rounder, and the alcohol finish is tamed. I like it much better, but it never really convinces of a Bordeaux blend as I always feel like I’m tasting an Austro-Hungarian red. In quality terms, worth the mid-$30’s pricetag. 1st night: B+ 2nd night: A-/B+
