Ridge Ponzo Vineyard Zinfandel 2007, Russian River Valley, 5% Petite Sirah, 15.5% alkie
On the nose ripe plummy fruit with a blast of alcohol. Pretty spices, very ripe and sweet. They call it exotic and I’d agree. Fairly nice finish of light tannins and cinnamon and other Asian spices. Fairly one dimensional but a decent enough drink. I’ll wait a year or so before the next bottle is opened but I think it’s a drink over the next 3 years wine. The SO liked it quite a bit more than me.
Tom Hill started an interesting thread over there about what it means to taste/rate a wine. Is it how it tastes now, over 3 hours, with food, its ultimate “best” etc?
Case in point…This wine last night was simple, not bad, can’t complain. A mere 24 hours later it blossoms into this rich and lovely concoction of chocolate, spice, caramel. The nose is terrific (still a bit too alcoholic) and the finish is long and exotic (the word Ridge used on the back label). This will be terrific over the next 5 years – just give it open time if you pop it up any time soon.
Damn! (Kudos to the SO who loved it last night.)
