TN: Proof you don't have to spend a fortune for good Burgundy ...

  • 2010 Clos Salomon Givry 1er Cru Clos Salomon - France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru (5/6/2014)
Colour light ruby. Bouquet of fresh, bright berry fruit: strawberries, raspberries, sour cherries and cranberries. Also, a compelling savoury component, some warm earth and brushwood. In the mouth, tart, with bright acidity. More fruit weight and depth on the mid palate than is your first impression. Good volume and ripeness to the fruit, nice silky texture. Flavours of sour cherry, cranberry and cooked meat juices, finishing moderately long on attractive savoury flavours. Ideally needs 2-3 more years, there are some tannins on the back palate to resolve here. It would be terrific to revisit in 8-10 years to see if it had developed more complexity and detail. Already this 6.9 ha monopole is one of the best values in Burgundy, Clos Salomon really nailed it in 2010. (91 pts.)

Nice job Howard. Many thanks. This looks very good.

Very pleased to see this…no one can ever say there are no bargins in burgundy with Givry around…this is an underrated appellation…the 2007 Michel Sarrazin champs lalot givry at $23 continues to haunt me to this day

Thank you, Howard. I really enjoy seeing notes on wines such as this. Those new to Burgundy should give wines like this a go, as I believe that they would quickly learn that there is a ton of good, affordable, age-worthy wine in the region. [cheers.gif]

well done as usual my friend

Hi Howard, nice note, who did you buy this off in NZ?

thnx Brodie

Awesome note, and thank you for the pic.

So many times with Burgundy, my brain won’t allow itself to memorize all the words, but I can’t forget a label!

Cheers!

I don’t normally ask for a price when I read tasting notes, but since you are offering this as “Proof you don’t have to spend a fortune for good Burgundy,” what does this wine cost?

Chris, Rob Panzer has it for $39. Www.downtoearthwines.net

Thanks for all of your kind comments.

Chris, I paid NZD45 (about US39), but you may be able to get it cheaper where you are (our wine prices tend to be high). I just checked the 2011 price and like everything it is creeping up … Still not too bad for 1er …

Anton, I’d like to take credit for the pic, but CT attaches them automatically when you post from there (another good reason to post from CT).

Brodie, I’m not sure you need more Burgundy in your cellars pileon but Maison Vauron sell it here. [cheers.gif]

Cheers, Howard

I had thought it might have been JC that brought it in. Your observation is true enough, my avatar is testimony to that…

Brodie

Cool Brodie, Regional also sells it.

Howard

I went through a case of the 05 on release. Great drinker. I also have multiple cases of the Givry by Joblot in 05 and 09. For some reason no one offered me the 10. :frowning:)

I have 08’-'11 in stock. Even the '12 whites from Fabrice and Ludo .
Great people!

I bought the 3 of the 2009 Clos Salamon from Rob Panzer. Just popped my first one last month - no tasting notes but remember enjoying it, and thinking it hit the sweet spot in terms of Burgundy QPR.
