FLYERS V. PENGUINS GAME 5 - Rapid City, SD (4/20/2012)
Opened some bottles in hope the Flyers would close out the series against the Penguins…oh well.

2008 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Loibner Steinertal - Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
A great showing. The nose had lychee, peach, dandelion and seashell tones. The palate was just elegant…exactly what I’m looking for. The fruit was pure, cool and expressive. Pear, mango, fresh herbs, and passion fruit comprise the palate. Great acidity and nice depth of flavor. Was nervous this was going to be closed down…but, I was completely wrong. (93 pts.) -
2005 Henri Jouan Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Opened this up out of curiosity. Nose seemed reductive to me…figured that would go away with air, but the spicy plum/molasses tone (which I usually associate with reduction) never fully went away. Luckily, the body of the wine was beautifully composed. Spicy, cool red fruit were layered with mushrooms, and the typical beef brothiness that I associate with fruit from Clos Sorbe. The wine’s structure is worth noting too - it has nice acidity and a sense of rigidity that will take some time to breakdown. (91 pts.)
