Penfolds Grange 1997:
Pulled a random single of this to see what people would think of it on Saturday night. Huge nose of dark fruit, vanilla, creamy oak, Valrhona chocolate and berry liquor. The wine is not super-massive (in Aussie terms anyway) but it is certainly well-endowed. Packed with jammy, near-Port-ish flavors, each one lengthy and serious, with a finish that resonates in your mouth for some time. While a bit boisterous in the beginning, it says what it has to say and manages to calm down, becoming less and less rambunctious as the minutes count down. Not a great Grange but certainly good enough assuming you can appreciate these wines. I am teetering on whether or not I think this wine will actually improve. 90 points
