TN: Oxymoron- cheap Piemonte Nebbiolo

The title is a bit misleading, but the 2013 Albino Rocca ‘Rosso di Rocca’ is a blend of 80% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbera and 10% Cabernet Franc and is surprisingly sealed by screw cap. This is a wine that is accessible, pretty and sessionable, with correct Nebbiolo rose petal aromas and just a touch of furry tannins. But the bright red cherry scents and savoury mouthfeel is engaging. Perfect pizza wine and a super mid week value.

I have a few of the 2012 and couldn’t agree more. This is just a really terrific value.

Kent,
Thanks for the heads-up on this; love the producer.

Good to see a ‘name’ producer take the screw cap plunge.

I guess that wasn’t you that rated it 60 points on CT, then?

My cats at the moment are all imaginary, I can afford the risk of the occasional skrew cap.

I’ve not had the wine, used to like Rocca’s wines quite a bit, particularly the Loreto bottling, though the style was often a little too modern for my taste. Have not tasted since the passing of Angelo.

Hi Kent, thanks for the note. Out of curiosity did you source this from World Wine or International Fine Wines? I take it the $33-$35 AUD price point is comparable to what you paid for your bottle?

Yes, from International Fine Wines. Great range. Had a lovely 2010 Ricasoli Chianti Reserva Rocca Guiccardia from same source last night.

Excellent, thanks for the note Kent. I’ll order a couple bottles and have a look.

Vietti Castiglione. This answer is probably in the wrong thread. But for reasonably priced Barolo, especially in a restaurant, this cannot be beat for my palate.

Love Castiglione, buy a 6 pack every year, but it is $100 to $120 retail here, so hardly a daily quaffer in my house.

Wow! Not here. $38 US.

The “real” answer for cheap Piemonte Nebbiolo is Albugnano. A small DOC covering four comuni in the north of Asti province: Albugnano, Pino d’Asti, Castelnuovo don Bosco and Passerano Marmorito. Relatively cool and high hills up to about 500MASL. Min 85% Nebbiolo, the better Albugnano Superiore are often 100%. Small zone, small production, few producers, quality level not very high in general, prices low. The best examples are quite nice, early ripening fresh Nebbiolo at ridiculous value. Only problem I think very little is exported.
