TN: Northern Rhones R&D

Good times at the job… The kind of thing where I’d normally be on the road and missing…

NORTHERN RHONES R&D - (2/28/2014)

Product research tasting at the job

  • 2010 Cave de Chante-Perdrix Condrieu “Authentic” - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
Gold in color. Aromas heavy on honey and butterscotch, some oxidated notes, with some earth and stone fruit. Racy and bright on the palate, showing mineral and earth complexity along with pithy citrus and stone fruit. A little coarse in texture with a full finish of spice and citrus. (88 pts.)
  • 2011 Mathilde et Yves Gangloff Condrieu - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
Pure gold color. Aromas of slate, tea, earth, sweet spice, spring blossoms and tropical fruit. Very rich on the palate, but brightly showing citrus zest and stone fruit along with lots of vanilla and butterscotch. Fleshy texture, medium bodied. Medium fruit-driven finish. Showy now, I got the sense that this will gain complexity on the palate over time. (91 pts.)
  • 2011 Domaine Georges Vernay Condrieu Les Terrasses de l’Empire - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
Light gold color. Primary aromas of mineral, citrus zest, and freshly cut flowers, along with an underlying savory spice. Very pretty and complex on the palate, delicate at first but gaining in weight and melding its layers as it’s exposed to air. Bright citrus notes, earthy spice, honeysuckle, and mineral. On the one hand this is lean on the palate, on the other it has such a strong presence and polish and is so layered. Finishes full. Great stuff. (93 pts.)
  • 2012 Domaine Auguste Clape St. Péray Blanc - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Péray
Aromas of candied pecan, earth, and baked apple. Richly layered on the palate with apple and peach, along with melange of baking spice and herbal notes. Big and polished on the palate with a full finish. (90 pts.)
  • 2010 J.L. Chave Sélection St. Joseph Offerus - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Complex aromas of mineral, cracked pepper, garrigue, anise and red cherry. Bright primary red fruit on the palate along with lots of earth, herb, tea, and mineral notes throughout. Beautifully complex, a bit austere, and firm in structure. Mouthwatering on the finish with lingering fruit. Very enjoyable. (92 pts.)
  • 2009 Domaine du Colombier Hermitage - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Aromas of eastern spice, butcher shop, violets, cassis, and dark berries. Richly layered palate of blackberry and black cherry, peppercorn, mineral, anise, baking and savory spice. Full and polished throughout, with round creamy tannins and a long finish. Really nice- deceptively powerful. In a good place but not really showing all it’s got. (93 pts.)

Nice notes.

Have you ( or anyone out there) had experience with older Offerus? Wondering if it can handle some bottle age or should really be drunk young…

I haven’t Noah. My feeling was that it had enough structure (both acid and tannin), and enough flavor complexity to handle some bottle age.

I don’t have any recent experience but the 95 and 96 were fine for ten years or more. CT notes seem to indicate they might still be good.

The 01 is just now beginning to drink well. There is no hurry with this wine.
