TN: Mission Impossible

Does anybody else suffer from this malady.

About once every other month or so, out of the blue, my sense of smell and taste shut down. A rep brought in a large line up of wines, 07 and 08 Oregon Pinot, French Cab Franc, a couple Zins and a McRae Syrah. The first wine had no nose and little or no flavor. I thought I could taste some hints of berry, but they were indistinct. I chewed, sucked air, no improvement. I could tell the next wine had a little more fruit and body, but thats all. On to the next wine, the Cab Franc. No nose. No taste, but it took the moisture out of mouth. The next wine, a Zin, I noticed RS and a spice I associate with Zin but not sure which one. Carrie tells me she gets bell pepper and the wine is portish. Thought I got coffee notes on the Syrah. I’ve had “palate fatigue” at various large scale events and this isn’t it. I have no sense of taste and smell. Fortunately, Carrie is the wine buyer for the obvious reasons. (added error. Carrie just told me the McRae Syrah was a Mourvedre.)

Now, an hour later I’m tasting a wine I know, and I swear I can taste all the things I know are in this wine. As I write this, Carrie, who is drinking the same wine, says everything tastes tart to her tonight. Its not tart to me. Weather? Its been raining for five hours and that should take the allergens out of the air.

Any expert out there got an answer?

Amazing…you actually like something.

When you drink as much crap as I do on a nearly daily basis, it wears on you.

You do not want to see all of my TNs, trust me.

From another thread. Dan may have the answer.
