TN: Martin Weiner Grand Cru Burgundy Tasting (DRCs, Anne Gros, Leroy)

MARTIN WEINER GRAND CRU BURGUNDY TASTING (DRCS, ANNE GROS, LEROY) - Martin Weiner’s home in Westwood, Los Angeles, California (11/20/2009)

This tasting, which included seven DRCs and 22 Burgundies in all, was the main impetus for my trip down to L.A. last month, that and seeing old friends there. As usual at Martin’s tastings, we started with the younger wines and lesser vineyards and worked our way up to the older and more profound wines. Despite the presence of the DRCs, my WOTN was the stunning '93 Leroy Clos de la Roche. The best of the DRCs was the '89 La Tache. (Our '90 Richebourg was surprisngly oxidized, so showed much less well than I would have expected, and certainly much less well than the '90 Grands-Echezeaux.) I was also very pleased with our '95 Anne Gros Richebourg amd a youthful but impressive '02 Mugneret Echezeaux. For fun, Martin threw in a blind wine, as he often does, thinking that it might fit in better with the lineup than this one actually did. Those of us who were guessing said it had to be California, and probably Russian River area. It turned out to be an '04 Marcassin Blue Slide Ridge.

Another lovely evening of excellent Burgundies assembled by Martin.

Once again Richard, beyond the call of duty! Great notes, excellent lineup.

Thanks for the notes, I’ve always wanted to try one of the Martin Weiner dinners, I’ll have to put that on the list for '10.

Wow!

Great line-up. Frankly, I’m a bit surprised that many of the scores weren’t higher, given the price points of these wines, but I guess that goes with the breaks.

Thanks for sharing.

my feelings as well.
