Certainly not the biggest & most obvious Chateauneuf, but a 100% Grenache bottling never-the-less. I was quite taken by the 2001 version of this ‘Domaine et Selection’ oddball, so much so I bought another case. This 1998 didn’t have the same effect. It was an OK wine but slightly disjointed and moderate in its manner. It is certainly mature and possesses a certain softness in the fruit and tannins, but with almost 12 years on there is no real charm or depth to be found, at least not in this bottle.
Perhaps I still fail to be seduced by 1998 Chateauneuf’s, Beaucastel & Pegau aside. Drink up if you have any. 14.5%vol.
