TN: Lucia Syrah Garys Vineyard 2007

Lucia Syrah Garys Vineyard 2007:
Here is a wine/winery I am generally fan of . . . and one that really shows off the alleged excellence of 2007 as a vintage. The nose is a hodgepodge of super-ripe berries, freshly cut flowers and campfire smoke. Those ripe fruit flavors dominate the flavor profile but bits of complexity come from notes of caramel (oak?), charcoal, blackberry compote and bramble. The last glass yielded further notes of damp earth and camphor, along with pure milk chocolate and tar. Opulent, pure and simply delicious . . . Like most California Syrahs I would like to see a touch more acid and a little less globular fruit, but all-in-all this was very successful. 92 points

Thanks for the note John. I’m a huge fan of their Syrahs also. My delivery is waiting for me at my cellar. I think an 07 Susan’s Hill note needs to go up in the next week or two.

But, they tend to taste so good.

Do you think the style effects the sales?

A bitch to sell in our parts.

A fan since the first vintage, and always lean toward the Susan’s if a choice is given, I agree these are wonderful wines in the $40 bracket. As tough as Syrah tends to be for retailers, us consumers should have zero complaints. I just grabbed more Arnot-Roberts Hudson from the 2005 vintage for $46. My point is if you miss them at release, you can pretty much find them at retail, and at a discount. I have seen the 2005 Lucia Susans for as low as $33. recently.

I just bought some more 2004 Scholium Scythia for $56 as well.
Thanks for the great note.

Don’t you think if I knew the answer I would have already come up with my own Syrah and flooded the market with it!

From Georgia?

No.

Gross . . .

John, appreciate the TN. I think Mike, Cris and I control a big chunk of the Lucia syrah market. I buy a 1/2 dozen of both the garys’ and Susan’s Hill every year and I enjoy them every time. I saw your note and I went back to CT to see what else was in there and not one note other than the one I added back in June when I visited Jeff Pisoni at the winery in Santa Rosa. The Garys’ was good at that time and to the point Cris made, with my shipment arriving last week, time to try one over T-Giving. I consider Lucia to be in my Top 3 for CA syrah and the pricing is more than fair.

Added to the database. Early on for this bottle, as it’s been bottled only about 4 months and won’t release until later this year. A peppery whiff floats up from the wine, with jerky and whole cluster. Deep flavors, plush and generous, with blackberry. As it sits in the glass, it gets better and better. Like with the 2006, which at this point I still prefer the Garys’ over the Susan’s Hill, this Garys’ looks to be killer again.
