TN: L'Evangile 1966 and Magdelaine 1970 at Blue Hill at Stone Barns

Dinner at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. I brought two bottles, this one and a 1970 Magdelaine. Food was magnificent, and there was a wonderful backdrop as lightening, thunder and rain cascaded through the large windows. The restaurant lost electricity, but luckily had a back-up generator.

1966 Château L’Evangile (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol)

When this was opened, the color was dark crimson; if there was any browning I missed it, although the light was a restaurant dim. Superb nose, of dark fruit, leather and spice. On the palate still young. Beautiful flavors although plenty of fruit, and a long seamless finish. 94

1970 Château Magdelaine (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru)
The first time the wine has showed signs of fading. Still quite good, and powerful, but now the flavors are almost entirely tertiary and I see an end in sight. 91

Both sound good Mark, thanks for the notes.

Did they have enough time to develop? Good older wines like these usually like the slow-O approach too!

Dinner was around four hours; we did not slow o, but the wine did develop in the glass; the Evangile beautifully, the Magdelaine was fine but by the end of the meal was noticeably tiring

I had a 1970 Magdelaine recently too, with similar impressions.

Started out quite well, but was definitely fading by the end.

Still, not bad for a nearly 44 year old merlot!
