LAST NIGHTS WINES - (4/1/2012)
Last night I attended a fundraiser dinner for a charity. Luckily, we were able to BYO the wines as the wines served left much to desire. We also opened a couple bottles of our SonkinCellars wine to share.

2001 Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Mülheimer Sonnenlay Riesling Auslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
This is drinking well now but still on the youthful side. Light golden in color. The nose is mineral driven with some candied pineapple and also pear. Slightly viscous texture. Sweet for sure, but not cloying and very food friendly acidity. Long finish. A crowd-pleaser too. (93 pts.) -
2007 Newton Cabernet Sauvignon Unfiltered - USA, California, Napa Valley
Nice solid cab. ruby/purple in color. The nose has cassis, cedar; pretty nice. On the palate, this is good, not great. Didn’t really get any better over the evening but didn’t drop off either. A very solid Cal Cab. (89 pts.) -
2003 Château Lascombes - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Best bottle of this I have yet had. The nose is just awesome. Complex, earthy with cassis, dark cherries, slight barnyard and deep. On the palate, this lags behind a bit although it did improve all night long. Next to all the US Cabs it was a bit thinner on the palate, but I would still call it full bodied. More plums than cherries, if that makes sense for the fruit. Showing some complexity but not much. Not much oak showing on this bottle which can be an issue for this Chateau. No hurry on it. (92 pts.) -
2008 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis - USA, California, Napa Valley
I found this disappointing. not bad, just had higher expectations. This is a nice Cal Cab that should cost about $15. I suspect its a good deal higher though. The nose is dusty with some cassis and some vanilla. On the palate, one dimensional. Full bodied. Nice cassis fruit. Clipped finish. (87 pts.) -
2005 Sineann Cabernet Sauvignon Block One - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
Purple in color. The nose has nice cassis notes with a mineral undertone. A bit dusty. Not as expressive as I might have thought. These age very slowly and so, at the risk of excusing the wine, this might be in an awkward stage now. I base that on knowing the wine a bit, but more on the quality of the texture and what seems to be there. On the palate, cassis, slight bell pepper, and a bit of herbal notes. Also an iron note. Great plush texture. Long finish. Really good right now, but I would wait or give it some air. (91 pts.) -
2009 Bevan Cellars Ontogeny - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Easily the wine of the night. Despite its youth, this was singing. Bevan wines are amazingly accessible in their youth. Purple in color with some magenta. The nose is great with lifting aromatics. Cassis, black raspberries, leather a slight pie filling note. On the palate, this is lush and delicious. Black raspberries, blueberries, and cassis. There is a complexity. I don’t know if it ages a long time, but I plan on drinking my young anyway. (95 pts.)
