This is about as good as an affordable “house Champagne” can get. There’s copious fruit, some youthful yeastiness and an inviting freshness that makes it very easy to drink. The palate impression is quite fine, and overall it’s refreshing and fun, which leads to empty bottles. Great QPR at under $30.
I think their NV rose is the strongest wine in their stable.
The rosé is quite good. I am partial to their Champagne made from the heritage varieties as well.
I’ve only had one of those twice, and I found it interesting but not compelling. Not interesting enough to allocate dollars there rather than the rose and other producers stuff.
I managed to pick up a case of this for about $22/bottle after discount, etc. A great value, IMO.
Wow. I thought $26 was good.
I agree- actually with both statements- the NV Brut and Rose are both excellent values.
We enjoyed the Rose last night to toast the New Year. Excellent QPR.
Like David, I struggle to think of a better Champagne at this price point (notwithstanding the (very reasonable) price increase over the past decade). For a moment there I thought Hebrart’s BdB would win-out over this one, but that has proven untrue; admittedly, the Hebrart has the advantage of being more easily obtainable; I don’t believe I’d seen this Aubry (or pretty much any Aubry, for that matter) at my usual sources for at least three years until I ran into some about 3 months ago. This really should be a case buy for me, but my constant inclination to sample around tends to get in my way of doing that.
NV L. Aubry Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut - France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru (12/10/2022)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over a couple hours –
NOSE: light, crisp apple.
BODY: light pinkish color; medium-light bodied.
TASTE: crisp, but not austere; some apple; a touch “winey”; dosage is noticeable, but seems to be on the drier of Brut. Excellent QPR @ $35.
I try to keep 3-6 bottles of this at all times.
I also think Aubry de Humbert is one of the great values in Champagne. I’ve noticed it really shines after just a couple of years in the cellar.
NV L. Aubry Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut - France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru (12/1/2023)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over a couple hours –
– 30% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Meunier, 35% Pinot Noir, and 5% mix of Arbanne, Petit Meslier & Fromenteau –
– dosage: 6 g/L, according to producer’s website –
NOSE: light aromatics that reflect the palate.
BODY: rose gold color; medium-light bodied.
TASTE: quite dry, with a relatively airy mouthfeel, but without compromising in the flavor department; medium-light pear and apple mix; a touch vinous; hint of chalkiness; more green pears than apples; not terribly complex, but a QPR champion at $35.
Local grocer on sale for $21.
Whhhhaaaaat?!? I would clear 'em out.
Thats ridiculous.
Wow! I would be concerned about condition. These have had disgorgement dates on them for quite a while (through Skurnik, anyway), so hopefully you can tell how old they are. If they aren’t old, I would buy cases or as much as they have.
DG Dec 2022
That’s fantastic.
