TN: Krug Vs. Dom Perignon Oenotheque - Smackdown!

The last 90 DP Oeno I had was disgorged in the 2003/2004 timeframe and it was really, really good; in a perfect place to drink now and drinking better than any 90 Krug I have had at this point (the 90 Krug to needs more time for my palate).

It’s interesting that the Oeno disgorgements are so different. I was unimpressed by an older disgorgement of the '90 Oeno but after tasting the 2003 disgorgement I bought some. So far two bottles have been very good with complexity and quite a bit of acidity.

If anyone sees a decent price on the '95 Oeno I’m game, just pm me. Wedding year for us, yada yada.

I’ve found some in my neck of the woods that I’m interested in picking up. Could those in the know shed some more light on the different disgorgements? I’ve found some 05 disgorgement for a decent price.

Brad, I think I’ve seen you write before about different disgorgements of the Clos des Goisses, and that your opinion is eventually they should all turn out fine, even if some are more awkward now than others.

Would you have the same feeling regarding Dom Oeno?

Bobby

Bobby,

My view on the 96 Clos des Goisses is that all disgorgements are good and most will slowly come together, but the April 2006 disgorgement shines much brighter than the rest and always will. The earlier disgorgements are also nice with the later disgorgements a bit weaker right now.

For the 95 DP Oeno, there are differences between the 05,06, and 07 disgorgements, but I think time will see them all come closer together. For right now, I agree the 06 drinks best.

Good grief - compared to normal, run-of-the-mill, pedestrian oenophilia, champagne-ophilia is on an entirely different plane of hedonistic decadence.

Ok… here was last night’s lineup. As i menioned, I’m not a teriffic wine writer (and I forgot a pen), so I’ll just post my general impressions from memory.

90 Oeno - Disgorged in 2003 : Very light, citrusy, slightly smoky. Not much of an umph to it, but that was actually prefered by some of the group
90 Krug - In comparison to the 95, it didn’t have the same level of toastiness and brioche but overall it seemed more complex and intresting - made you think about it more.
95 Oeno - Disgorged in 2006 - Best of all worlds… more smokiness, still with the citrus peel, and adding a fuller, denser richer feel that the 90 but while still remaining crisp.
95 Krug - Rich, hazelnut, toasty, bricohe, cream. This is waht I expect when I drink Krug.

It all seemed to come down to stylistic preference. I’ve always loved Krug, but not so much Dom as I prefer a richer tasting champagne with the nuttiness and toastiness of Krug. Krug uses oak but Dom Oeno doesn’t. But Krug tries to avoid malolactic fermentation. So the richness comes from the oak and the yeast. On the Dom side, I’ve never enjoyed Dom Perignon unless they were old bottles. Oenotheque’s late disgrgements start at a minimum of 6 years after the inital 6-7 years that Dom is in the bottle. That makes quite a difference.

My ranking for these would be: Have a hard time doing this because the styles, even with Oenos’ extended contact with the yeast, are very different. On the Krug, I barely put the 90 over the 95. On the Dom Oeno, I much prefered the 95.

Great info
Thanks for posting!
