JUST A MONDAY NIGHT THANG - Lucio’s BYOB, Houston (10/14/2013)
A little impromptu get together with jar1 and pdhall led to a surprising night of great wines. The whites stole the show with the 86 Brouchard Montrachet showing why vineyards matter. The white simply dominated the reds, all of them were extremely impressive.

1986 Bouchard Père et Fils Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Notes are from last glass. Superb nose of toffee, flint, meyer lemon, and figs. On the palate, butterscotch, lemon curd, red apple, mineral, hints of pear. Finishes very long with racy acidity. WOTN in a night of three great whites (94 pts.) -
2001 Trimbach Pinot Gris Réserve Personnelle - France, Alsace, Alsace AOC
Popped and poured. Nose of petrol, lychee, bright citrus, sea air, and pineapple. On the palate rich and full with lychee, lemon curd, saline, white peach. Finishes long and crisp. This wine amazes me every time I drink it. One the great values. #2 WOTN (93 pts.) -
2009 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Opened and followed over three hours. Great nose of matchstick, citrus, Granny Smith apple, and mineral (slate?). On the palate, dense and tightly coiled with Meyer lemon, Granny Smith apple, mineral, and salted caramel. Intense long finish. On most nights this is WOTN, tonight it is a strong #3. Great future for this one. Hold for a few years. (93 pts.) -
1981 Château Montrose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Opened for two hours and poured. Notes are from last glass. Nose of cigar box, pipe tobacco, bright cherries, hints of leather and mint. On the palate bright cherries, tobacco, mint, leather. Finishes soft with nice acidity and touch of grip. Filled in nicely as the night went on. (91 pts.) -
1978 Château Palmer - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Seemed tire compared to the last one. Nose of currant, plum, tobacco, and spice. On the palate, black cherry, plum, currant, tobacco, cedar. Finishes with decent balance. (89 pts.) -
1994 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Great nose of orange peel, spice, dried cherries, dried flowers, earth, mushroom, and anise. On the palate deceptively full-bodied with cherry, orange peel, mineral, earth, spice, and herbs. Long finish. Needs more time (92 pts.)
If you have a chance to buy the 2009 Bouchard Corton-Charlie, get it and lay it down for a few years, you will not be disappointed.
