TN: Italian wine themed "European Lunch" - '97 Vintage

ITALIAN WINE THEMED “EUROPEAN LUNCH” - Zibbibo Restaurant, Palo Alto, California (6/5/2009)

So I finally got a chance to join Jayaram and company for one of their monthly Friday “European lunch” tastings at Zibbibo. Jayaram has organized about 12 of these in the past year, and I was either in bargaining sessions, seminars or some other work obstruction to the simple joys of whiling away a workday afternoon with good food and even better wine. Zibbibo makes it easy to hang out, eat and taste at our leisure. I was lucky enough to make it on a day when one attendee, Amnon, had offered to bring all the reds, for an Italian theme tasting, so the rest of us filled in with whites and a sweet. It turned out Amnon’s wines were all from the excellent '97 vintage, and it was a great opportunity to see how those twelve-year-old beauties are doing. The Solaia was my WOTD, followed by the '00 Bouchard Chevalier-Montrachet, which just kept blossoming in the glass as it sat there for two hours. All the '97s except the Azelia were showing well though, if a little young and tight yet, as might be expected.

Thanks for the awesome notes and food pics. The '97 Tig and Solaia are tremendous wines.

Great line up of wines and that food looks amazing. Thanks for the notes. 1997 Barolos are starting to drink nicely

Thanks for the notes… I agree the successful 97 Barolo are getting to a “drink me” stage and will definitely not live as long as the 96/99. However 97 is a touch of a minefield… for a lot of producers there it was their first go round with a really hot vintage and not everyone was uniformly successful. For instance Cavallotto told me that they weren’t fully happy with their 97’s (I haven’t had any, only 96/98/99/01/04) but it sounds like your bottle was fantastic.

Great pics, wines and lunch… Barolo’s with some age are really something special… I need to have a lunch like that soon…

Very nice!!

Great notes, great tasting!

The food pix look delicious!

Can you identify the people in the pix?

I’m happy to. Unfortunately my people pics didn’t turn out as well as my food and wine pics that day, so I’m missing pics of half the participants. Pictured from left to right at the top are our organizer, Jayaram Bhat; Amnon Landan, who brought the Italian reds that day; and Alan Rath, a WineBerserker member. Not pictured are Mark Sutherland, Jill Bibo, Krishna Tamanna and TJ Mueller (our most Italian-wine knowledgeable participant).

Thanks, Richard. I have some of those '97 Barolos (Cavallotto and Marcarini) and so that is a particularly helpful side-by-side write up for me.

I have only one bottle of '97 Barolo - E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) - with the right meal, now might be a fun time to try it.
