Anyone commented LLC and BAMA 2000 ?
The definition of colloquialism refers to informal speech, a term one might use in conversation but not so much in an academic paper. The AHās diagnosis of the āusage problemā and its description of acronym as different from initialism in āstrict usageā seems quite clearly to put it in that bucket. It appropriately recognizes the meaning without blessing it as correct.
I love how you guys managed to hijack the thread from what I love (wine) to a completely another subject I love (utterly pointless nitpicking).
Yeah, yeah, ywah.
Haha, so true. So I wonder, Otto, is DORK an acronym, initialism or abbreviation for something occuring here?
PS. Was watching BAMA earlier, drinking beer. That, decidedly, is not DORK.
Iām sure some smartypants could at least make DORK into a witty backronym!
But what does it have to say about opacity?

You just stated their tautological equivalence.

Well, somebodyās gotta start from somewhere!
Great notes, Otto. I had the 2000 Troplong-Mondot recently, and your assessment is completely spot on.
Great retrospective. Iāve bought and been drinking quite a few 2000s recently, so this thread resonates. That Chasse Spleen is a great sleeper, wish I had more. My thoughts are very similar on that Magdelaine. Iām sitting on over a case, and have high expectations, but the last three bottles Iāve had this past year showed similarly. Iāve concluded Magdelaine in years like 2000, really do need a lot more time than 20 years. The 1980s vintages are drinking fantastically well with this estate, my last a stunning 1982 just 2 weeks ago. I missed on the Pichon Baron, my kind of wine for sure.
Interesting comments on the integration of the modern trappings. Do you think subsequent years where perhaps warmer climates, more modern heavy-handed making, and of course the critics and pointsā chasing, will resolve the same way? I do not, but Iām often wrong as well! Pape Clement and Troplong seem to have become more Franken-wines as the decade progressed.

Bring it Thursday night!
āOriginalismā just didnāt take. It failed to pass the usage test, from which there is no appeal.
FIFY.
I have no skin in the rest of the discussion.

F*ck. I had to google that. And youāre not even āMurican.

Yes! See Post 70 above.

Itās a recursive backronym for āDORKs often reply knowledgeably.ā For example:
āThese nit-pickers may be long-winded and annoying, but DORK.ā
2000 Baron de Château Pichon-Longueville or simply, Pichon Baron
Cornucopia of scorched gravel, floral, fruit, tobacco and fresh bread on the bouquet.
High-pitched lip-smacking red fruit acidity. Tannic structure still in place. 4-hours in the decanter and strutted out glimpses of future Pauillac glory. Will wait 7 years to dip into rest of the stash.
Thanks, Ramon. Sounds promising but needing to turn 30 before truly shining.
Thatās my general impression of most top 2000 Bordeaux.

I like many expressions of green in my Cabs and Cab-based wines. I think many of you know I love Loire Cab Franc, which often comes across as herbaceous or show distinct bell pepper. I love classic old school Napa Cabs with mint/eucalpytus notes, think Heitz. Or Togni with its bell pepper notes. Had a 1971 Chilean Cab served blind to me at Bernās this year, It had lovely notes of green in it. Bordeaux like Sociando, BAMA, Magdelaine, are wines I chase for that very reason. They are ripe for my palate, perhaps underripe for others, and show lovely traces of green, which can manifest as herbs, herbaceousness, mint, bell pepper, etc. I do not like when it ventures into asparagus. Yuk.
Buy the 1994 Caves São João Cabernet Sauvignon Quinta do Poço do Lobo if you ever come across it. The '95 was good, too, but I bet the '94 is more up your alley. Plus, it gets bonus points for being an unusual wine.
