TN: Impressive South African - 2003 De Toren Fusion V

  • 2003 De Toren Fusion V - South Africa, Coastal Region (10/27/2009)
A very impressive bordeaux blend from South Africa. Initially, a sharp cherry note stood out the finish but that smoothed out with time and air. Good structure and balance with lots of fruit - could easily be confused with a cab franc-dominated right banker (notwithstanding the fact that cab franc is only about 10% of the mix). I think this will continue to develop and could age for another 5- 10 years. This wine would be a great ringer in a blind bordeaux tasting. (90 pts.)

Greg,
You should include this in one of our future Bordeaux tastings. I think the cab franc note that you got is due to the SA’s growing condition, hot but short so I got green note on all the wines that I had while in cape town.

That makes sense. This was my last bottle but if I find another I would like to include it in one of our blind tastings.
