2006 Terry Hoage Vineyards Cuvée The Pick - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (11/29/2009)
I am a big fan of these wines and while I would like to have let it age a bit more, I popped it anyway. Ruby in color with purple swirls. the nose is big and welcoming. Black and red raspberries, leather, grilled meats and some funk. Full bodied. On the palate, this is lush and drink smoothly with no heat despite the 15.3%. Lots of red and purple fruits with some pepper. Nice finish. It is a big wine, but balanced. (91 pts.) -
2005 Cakebread Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (11/29/2009)
Not a wine I would typically drink, but this was in my cellar and I felt like drinking a Cab. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cassis, leather, and some oak, mostly vanilla. full bodied. On the palate, this is easy to drink with some complexity. Cassis and oak flavors. Nice balance and richness. Good finish. Pretty much a classic Napa Cab but at $80 Ohio, way over priced. That said, it was still very enjoyable. (90 pts.) -
2007 Grosjean Valle d’Aosta Vigne Rovettaz Cornalin - Italy, Valle d’Aosta (11/29/2009)
Bought this for fun and interest and it was that. not a great wine and at $30, certainly not worth another bottle though. Glad to have tried one. Ruby in color, perhaps a bit lighter. Clear and bright. The nose has cherries and some minerals. Not much on the palate. Thin and under ripe cherries. Lacking complexity. Perhaps it needs more time, perhaps that is the way it is. I am a fan of most of the VdA wines I have had, but in general prefer the whites. I don’t have enough experience to know how this compares to other producers and other vintages of Cornalin. 1999 Montaribaldi Barbaresco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (11/29/2009)
Ruby in color. This wine was disappointing. I struggled with the first glass and then decided life was too short and opted for something else. It had some nebiolo notes but was tart and out of balance. I think it was probably past prime, but I would have thought this had more life left in it. Some cherry fruit, but really sharp acidity. 2007 Domaine Charvin Vin de Pays de la Principauté d’Orange ‘à côté’ - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vin de Pays de la Principauté d’Orange (11/29/2009)
This was disappointing. Ruby in color. The nose is dusty with some cherries but not showing much. On the palate, this is weak and disjointed. some cherries, some heat, really not much of anything. Proper bottle? Don’t know, but even as inexpensive as this was, it was not worth it. It sat on the counter for a few days with no signs of TCA, so that was not the issue I do not believe. (78 pts.)
