TN: Gargantua Syrah OR '22...(short/boring)

TomTierney brought this to share at our Italian tasting last night at Laura’s Pig+Fig:

  1. gargantua Syrah OR (13.3%; www.GargantuaWine.com) Josh Bergstrom/Newberg/OR 2022: Very dark/near black color; intense peppery/c-c Syrah/blackberry/very spicy quite Rhonish rather Hermitage-like slight earthy complex nose; quite tart/tangy very Rhonish rather extracted/structure quite c-c Syrah/black pepper/blackberry/blueberry/Syrah/very spicy some complex flavor w/ ample chewey tannins; very long quite tannic/extracted/structured rather c-c Syrah/black pepper finish that mocks flavor; a very young extracted Syrah that needs at least 5-10 yrs, maybe longer; rather atypical of US Syrah & resembles a lot a young Hermitage or Rayas Syrah w/o the Rhonish perfume those show; a extraordinary Syrah. $75.00 (vTT)

More garbledflout from TheBloodyPulpit:

  1. Gargantua is Josh Bergstrom, OR Pinot producer, venture into the world of Syrah. He also makes a CA Syrah from BienNacido vnyd. This one comes from assorted somewhat old OR vnyds.
I was mightily impressed by the rendition of US Syrah. It shows an extraction level similar to Alban/SQN Syrah but the acidity level suggests it will age far better than those Syrahs. A real Syrah discovery for me.

Tom,
What is the stated abv?
Don’t you find that price a little daunting?

I visited Bergstrom in the spring of 2023 and they included a side by side of the CA, OR, and WA Gargantua Syrah - the wines really surprised me and turned out to be a highlight of their lineup for me.
