TN: FU comes to town....Salon,Carillon,Masseto,Roulot,Giacosa,Leroy,Mugneret....

Charlie Fu joined Edson Gonzales and I for a night of excess at a local restaurant here in Modesto…food was killer, as always, but I was more focused on the amazing set of wines we had…8 bottles between the 3 of us…yea…that seems about right! [drinkers.gif] And when you leave with just about even more wine than you came in with(can’t pass up half price 98 Masseto and 96 Giacosa Red Label [wow.gif] )…you know it’s been a good night! Super fun guys…lets do it again!! [cheers.gif]
FU COMES TO TOWN - (8/2/2013)

  • 1999 Salon Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne
Needs serious time…still quite coiled, but OH so refreshing and crisp…tart lemon citrus, green apple skin, ginger airy mousse, white flowers…did cream up later on, little smoke and lees…laser beam citrus and minerality. Love it now, but better in 10 more yrs. (94 pts.)
  • 2001 Louis Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Had with the 84…second time with this one…rich and creamy, loaded with ripe pit fruit, cut nicely with bright citrus and tons of crushed chalky minerals. Smoked vanilla bean, little truffle, exotic honey butter creme, spice…such purity…love how all that richness is lifted underneath with that huge acidity. Super wine! (97 pts.)
  • 1984 Louis Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Had with the 01…started out with some antique wax, baked apple, smoke…blew off with a decant…soft and delicate, pure alive fruit with lemon citrus freshness…wonderfully integrated aged character, loaded with crushed stones and earth…dried honey, vanilla…reminded me a little of an aged Chapoutier Ermitage Blanc! Cool stuff! (94 pts.)
  • 2008 Mongeard-Mugneret Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Man I liked this…crunchy cherry, raspberry fruit thats bright and translucent…KILLER white pepper spice! Very smooth and seamless…woodsy smoke, pretty florals, minerality…should be amazing in 10-20 years. (95 pts.)
  • 1992 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée Les Genaivrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Pungent smoky earth, leather, paprika and cinnamon spices…aged red fruits, still sweet and kept alive with some nice orange acidity, sour cherry skin…wonderful dried florals and mossy sous bois…pretty killer for the vintage! (92 pts.)
  • 2010 Domaine Jean Marc Roulot Meursault Clos des Boucheres - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Laser beam freshness here…classic Roulot lime…piercing acidity, fresh flowers, crushed flint, chalk dust…so pure with great tension…will be sickly good in 5+yrs! +pts (95 pts.)
  • 1996 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Falletto di Serralunga d’Alba - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
45 min decant before dinner…and decant throughout…needs days decant! HUGE structure to go along with the massive fruit…mouth puckering tannins give the sweet red floral fruits nice savory feel…wonderful dried berries, tar, dusty earth spice, flowers, blood orange acidity…deep flavors…perfect with my grilled lamb tbone and mushroom risotto!! (96 pts.)
  • 1998 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Another first for me…this wine was amazing! Dark liqueured berry fruit…like ink! Smoooth as silk…so pure and plush, yet structured well with dusty chewy tannins and great minerality. Massive…yet elegant, no heat at all. Tasty wild berries, licorice, wood spice, coffee bean, currants…extremely long and savory finish. Instant fan here! (97 pts.)

It was. But my hearing ended by 12. Needed something to do until the next morning

Fu practices Burgundy, Champagne, and Barolo Law. It’s not easy but someone has to do it. Works extra hours eating good food too.
