TN: Friday afternoon of Burgundies and a California Pinot

A fantastic way to spend a Friday afternoon. 3 burgundies and a Sonoma Coast pinot accompanied by memoire (a creamy, smooth gouda from Holland sprinkled with truffles), acapella (a creamy goats milk cheese from California), saint agur (a wonderful bleu cheese), and mimolette (an aged cows milk cheese from France).

  • 1999 Vincent Girardin Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Peuillets - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru (8/21/2009)
Decanted 2 hours, enjoyed over the next 4. Wonderful nose of barnyard, dirt, leather, iron. Well balanced, smooth and earthy. Delicious wine. Such a fantastic blend of fruit, earth and spice.
  • 2005 Domaine Guy Dufouleur Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Perrière - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru (8/21/2009)
Popped and poured, enjoyed over 4 hours. Classic burgundy nose. Lovely upon opening, became very acidic and bitter with air. Almost undrinkable at the end.
  • 2006 Olivier Jouan Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru (8/21/2009)
Popped and poured, enjoyed over 4 hours. Nose a bit muted after opening, by the end showing more forest floor, earthy notes. Very fruit forward and concentrated, much closer to California pinot than classic Burgundy. With more air, revealed more structure, minerality and depth. Nice wine and very enjoyable.
  • 2006 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Falstaff Road Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (8/21/2009)
Popped and poured, enjoyed over 4 hours. Incredibly fragrant nose of mushrooms and earth. Slightly sweet upon opening, opened nicely over the four hours to reveal sour cherry, spice and dusty earthiness. I’m going to hold off on opening another one of these for a few years as I think that as the fruit subsides something wonderful will emerge.

Strange behavior on the 2005 NSG, how do you explain that?? Sounds more like what you’d expect with an older bottle where the fruit fades after opening.
