TN: Forlorn-Hope Batiscafo Verdelho '12...(short/boring)

Tried this from my new F-H shipment last night:

  1. Forlorn-Hope Batiscafo Verdelho DeWittVnyd/AmadorCnty (13.82%; 27 cs) 2012: Light yellow color; light stony/earthy some floral/mango/apple/quince pleasantly fruity nose; bit soft light metallic/grapefruity light mango/apple/quince light bodied slight earthy/stony simple flavor; med.long soft light apple/quince bit earthy/stony rather simple/fruity finish; a pleasant enough simple/fruity near vapid white; rather disappointing and on the dull/undistinguished side; not a bad wine but just doesn’t speak to me especially at the price. $45.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:

  1. A rather rare clunker from Matt. Surprising. Will try again in a month or so to see where it’s going.

thanks for the note. Do you think it could have benefitted from some air? Interesting to see a new-release white from 2012.

Also, I went to the Forlorn Hope tasting at Silver Lake Wine here in LA a few weeks ago; seeing Matt Rorick in person there at the epicenter of LA hipsterdom, surrounded by millennial yuppies (including myself, I have to admit), while picturing your post about feeding him your super-aged fruitcake in Los Alamos… couldn’t stop cracking up haha [thankyou.gif]

Wow. I had this a couple weeks ago, and I had a totally different experience. Much richer flavors than you describe, although I didn’t take notes so can’t really respond on specifics. But it was far from “near vapid.” I also don’t remember it being light yellow in color, although I could be wrong about that. I actually liked this so much that I went back and ordered the other four bottles available in the allocation as a reload. It is pricey, but obviously I thought it was worth it. To each his own.

Well, Fred…I tried it again this morning after it sat out all night (guy’s gotta have something w/ his Wheaties)
with much the same impression. So don’t think air would have helped.

Glad you got to meet Matt. Sounds like he’d have fit right in w/ that crowd. He’s one of my favorites.

Yup, Sean…I have an open mind on this wine & will retry it in a few months.

Last Fall I had a recent F-H white that I thought washed-out & vapid and trashed it in my TN.
Then had it again w/ Matt here in LosAlamos with a totally different reaction. Then recently at his tasting room in Napa & it was excellent.
Go figure.
